PHL RESUMES OLYMPIAD CAMPAIGN VS BULGARIA

Manila -- Resurgent Philippines resumes its campaign in the 40th FIDE World Chess Olympiad when it battles dangerous Bulgaria in the sixth round Monday at the WOW Convention Center in Istanbul, Turkey.

The Filipinos won their last matches against Iceland (3-1) to vault into a share of 5th to 21st place in the open section before the tournament took a break Sunday.

Grandmaster Wesley So, the highest-rated Filipino with an Elo of 2652, tries to end a string of two draws after an third-round victory when he handles white against GM Veselin Topalov (2752).

GM Oliver Barbosa (2554) battles GM Kiril Georgiev (2682) on board two, GM Eugene Torre (2469) faces GM Ivan Cheparinov (2681) on board three while GM Mark Paragua (2508) opposite GM Aleksander Delchev (2596) on board four.

The 35th-seeded Filipinos have 8 points based on the match points scoring system that gives two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero for a loss.

In women?s play, Woman International Master Catherine Perena (2091) will try to steer the Philippines past No. 14 seed France.

Perena will square off IM Almira Skripchenko (2442) on board 1, WNM Janelle Mae Frayna (1991) goes up against IM Milliet Sophie (2411) on board 2, WNM Jedara Docena (2061) versus IM Silvia Collas (2261) on board 3 while WNM Jan Jodilyn Fronda (2022) will meet WIM Andreea Bollengier (2253) on board four.

The 57-seed Filipinas jump to a share of 6th to 16th place with 11 others at eight points National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Chairman/President Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr. is expecting another battle royal between the Filipinos and Bulgarians in Monday night tussle. ?I expect another tough night (Monday) against Bulgaria just like last Saturday against Armenia," said Pichay, who watched the game live through internet back home here in Manila.

Last Sunday morning, The Filipinos defeated 51st-seed Iceland, 3-1, while the Filipinas clobbered 61st-seed South Africa, 3-1.
