PHILIPPINES SECOND ALL-TIME JONES CUP WINNER BEHIND USA

PhilBoxing.com

The Philippines now has the second most number of titles won in the William Jones Cup tournament when the Smart-Gilas team garnered the gold medal, winning a 76-75 squeaker over United States. However, USA remains as the number one team in the prestigious Taipei basketball tournament with 15 gold, 5 silver and 1 bronze medals.

The Philippines now have 4 gold and 3 bronze medals. Northern Consolidated Cement won it for the first time in 1981 over Sweden. San Miguel Beer won the second crown in 1985 conquering the United States. In 1998, the Centennial Team won it over host Chinese Taipei. This year Smart-Gilas defeated team USA for the title.

At third place is Iran with 3 gold and 1 silver medals. Fourth is host Chinese Taipei with 2-5-2. Fifth is Jordan with 2-1-0. Rounding the top ten are sixth South Korea 1-5-1, seventh Canada 1-5-0, eighth Australia 1-1-2, ninth Sweden 1-1-1 and tenth New Zealand 1-0-1. Mexico and West Germany had one gold apiece.

The NCC team in 1981 was mainly made up of 8 American players who were converted to naturalized Filipinos including Dennis Still and Jeff Moore. There were two Filipino-Americans, Willie Pearson and Ricardo Brown and two local players, JB Yango and Frankie Lim with American coach Ron Jacobs. This title failed to gain the sympathy among the majority of the Filipino fans, as they viewed the team as a group of Americans representing the Philippines.

The San Miguel team in 1985 had Moore and Still from the first NCC team, and this time included Hector Calma, Louie Brill, Samboy Lim, Allan Caidic, Yves Dignadice, Franz Pumaren, Jong Uichico, and Jun Tan. The team also had American shooting sensation Arthur Engelland who became a naturalized citizen.

The 1998 Centennial Team members were Alvin Patrimonio, Andy Seigle, Jojo Lastimosa, Dennis Espino, Allan Caidic, Jun Limpot, Vergel Meneses, Edward Joseph Feihl, Olsen Racela, Marlou Aquino, Johnny Abarrientos, and Kenneth Duremdes and coach Tim Cone.

The winning 2012 winning Smart-Gilas lineup included PBA players Ranidel De Ocampo, Larry Fonacier, Sonny Thoss, LA Tenorio, Mac Baracael, Jeff Chan, Gabe Norwood, Enrico Villanueva, Gary David, Jay-R Reyes, and Sol Mercado plus naturalized center Marcus Douthit, former San Beda sharpshooter Garvo Lanete, and Filipino-American point guard Matthew Rosser.

The Jones Cup in Taipei, Taiwan was named after Renato William Jones, a basketball promoter and one of the founders of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). It began in 1977 and invites clubs, collegiate teams, and national teams from around the world, although lately those who joined are clubs mainly from the Asian and the North American regions. In 2003, due to the SARS outbreak in Asia, the tournament was cancelled and continued the following year.
