Pinoy batters compete in World Series

PhilBoxing.com

MANILA (PNA) -- At the same time that the 11 Filipino athletes are seeking fame and glory in the coming 30th Olympic Games in London late this month until mid-August, three teams will be invading the different parts of the United States carrying the country?s Tri-Colors in separate World Series for boys baseball and girls softball.

First to try their luck to bring the world championship this shore are the Muntinlupa Big League boys baseballers aged 16-18 who will be vying for honors in their side of the World Series July 25-August 1 in Easley, South Carolina.
On the very next day, on August 2 until August 8, Team Manila?s Big Leaguers, three times runners up in girls softball 16-18, will be trying to end their bridesmaid finishes fashioned out in 2008, 2010 and 2011 by bringing home the gold medal this time in Kamalazoo, Michigan.

The International Little League of Manila?s (ILLAM) softbelles, on the other hand, fly to Portand, Oregon for the Big Leauge World Series for girls softball in the 11-12 age level August 9-15.

In Friday?s SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session, Muntinlupa team manager Ping Remollo and coach Iking Jimenez and ILLAM president Norman Macasaet and coach Randy Dizer pronounced their respective sides ready and raring to give the country honors inthe separate world tournaments they are taking part in.

Manila Councilor Che Borromeo and multi-titled coach Ana Santiago, likewise, said in the public service session, sponsored by Powerade, AKTV And FILA, that the Manila Golden Girls have prepared well for the Kalamazoo conclave, except the team still has to raise sufficient funds to make it to World Series.

Muntinlupa?s and ILLAM? trips to their respective destinations are fully paid by Little International on the trength of topping the Asia-Pacific eliminations against two or more teams, unlike Team Manila, which dominated Indonesia in a two-team, best-of-five series.
Because of this, Manila could only get $10,000subsidy from the international federation and, according to Borromeo, the team still needs $32,000 for the team members? plane fares.
A Filipina working in Jakarta by the name of Betty Abalos, site of the Asia-Pacific elimination last June, donated $1,800 for the plane fare of one player after learning of the team?s financial problems, but outside of that, Borromeo added, his pleas for assistance continued to fall on deaf ears.

Eight of Santiago?s 13-girl lineup come from UAAP softball champion Adamson University, headed by leauge MVP and ace pitcher Rizza Bernardino and including pitchder/outfielder Glesyl Opjer, pitche/ infielder Michelle Lentija, Mary Jane Fabellar, Andrea Mae Gonzales, Queeny Sabobo, Baby Jane Raro and Krisna Paguican.
University of Santo Tomas Trgresses Maria Luna Amparo, Kristine Joy Lacupa and Chamaine Joy Orzia beef up the team along with University of the East?s Gene Joy Parilla and Mary Joy Floranza of Polytrechnic University of the Philippines.
Like Team Manila, Remollo said, his Muntinlupa Big Leaguers are made up of UAAP selection headed by champion National U?s Jhondel Tolosa and Alfa Ian Turaray and indluding John Charles Altomonte, Jose Francisco Castro, Francisco Satoshi Hashimoto, Tsuyoshi Horibata, Jaime Regalado Inigo, Ferdinand Cadenas Liguayan Jr., Justin Vicente Mathay, Carlos Alberto Munoz, Jonahan Stewart Park, Felipe Claudio Remollo, Miguel Jose Salud and Dylan Francisco Tantuico.

ILLAM?s Major Leaguers boast of experience gained from playing since they were five years old in the association?s t-ball tournaments. They are Mayu Nislijima, Panjie Legaspi, Grace Stevens, Mariana Solitaria, Mia Laurel, Nicole Barndiarea, Therese Macasaet, Sabina Bitong, Chesca Nepomuceno, Anna Ozaeta and Claire Stevens.
