AMIR KHAN TO FACE DANNY GARCIA FOR WBC LIGHT WELTERWEIGHT TITLE By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 24 May 2012  Britain?s former WBA and IBF light welterweight champion Amir Khan will battle undefeated American Danny Garcia for the World Boxing Council light welterweight title at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on July 14. Active Television AKTV IBC 13 will telecast the fight on its increasingly popular weekly boxing show ?Big Time Bakbakan? at 12: noon on Sundays. Nicknamed ?Swift?, Garcia who is undefeated with a record of 23-0 with 14 knockouts won the vacant title from Mexican veteran Erik ?El Terrible? Morales with a twelve round unanimous decision last March 24 after Morales failed to make the weight and lost his title on the scales. To win the title Garcia needed to beat Morales and he did, overcoming the ageing veteran in a comfortable points decision. Khan on the other hand lost his WBA and IBF light welterweight titles to Lamont Peterson by a controversial twelve round split decision on December 10, 2011. However, a planned rematch set for May 19 was called off after Peterson, in tests administered in the lead-up to the rematch was found positive for an illegal substance. Peterson has appealed against the results and is presenting documents in support of his position while Khan is waiting to find out whether the belts he lost in controversial fashion will be returned to him and his titles restored. The 25 year old Khan who has a record of 26-2 with 18 knockouts believes that the 24 year old Garcia from Philadelphia will provide ?a tough test.? The Athens Olympic Games silver medalist told Sky Sports in London that it would be ?a great matchup. The WBC title will be on the line, which I?d love to win.? Khan doesn?t hide his displeasure at being denied an opportunity to avenge his loss to Patterson after he was deducted two points and lost a split decision. He told Sky Sports ?I?m still angry because I trained so hard for that fight, then in the last week it was called off and my training went down the drain and I couldn?t settle the score.?
