Escudero will be the guest of honor when the Grand Finals of the 2012 National Age Group and National Juniors Chess Championships gets underway today at the Tanauan Event Center in Tanauan City, Batangas. National Chess Federation president, former Congressman Prospero ?Butch? Pichay said that other during Friday?s SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session said that other personalities invited to grace the inaugural rites are Tanauan City Mayor Sonia Torres Aquino and other City Officials, NCFP Secretary-General Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino Jr., and Organizing Committee Chairman Atty. Raul V. Canobas. Pichay announced during the session, sponsored by Powerade, AKTV and FILA, that winners of the Tanauan leg as well as those in the Visayas and Mindanao numbering 180 pawn pushers in the boys and girls 8-under 10-under, 12-under,14-under,16-underand 20-under will earn their plkace in the Philippine team to the 2012 ASIAN Youth Chess Championships in Sri Lanka. The 30 finalist in the National Juniors, will vie for the bragging rights as Philippine Junior Champion and the chance to represent the country in the 2012 World Juniors Chess Championships in Athens, Greece. A tight race for the Juniors title is expected with 2010 Juniors titleholders FM Paulo Bersamina & NM Joey Albert Florendo, 2011 titlist Fide Master Marie Joseph Turqueza, FIDE Master Haridas Pascua and National Master Alcon John Datu in the line-up. The title retention bid of WNM Janelle Mae Frayna will be contested by WFM Cherry Ann Mejia, WNM Jan Jodilyn Fronda and WNM Jedara Docena. ?The National Age-Group and Juniors Championships and the Grand Finals are parts of NCFP?s, grassroot program aimed at producing more Chess Grandmasters and improved on the Philippines? current no. 13 in the world ranking,? Pichay, who attended the SCOOP forum with executive director Jayson Gonzales, said. As of today and since Pichay took over as NCFP head, the country?s GMs has grown to 17 from less than 10. Included in the lest are first Asian and Filipino GM Eugene Torre and current chess hero Wesley So, the youngest to have been accorded the honor.
