SUAREZ SCORES ANOTHER SPECTACULAR WIN, GOES FOR GOLD AND AN OLYMPIC BERTH

PhilBoxing.com

Following another spectacular win, lightweight Charly Suarez goes for gold and a berth in the London Olympics later this year when he battles China?s veteran Asian Championship silver medalist Qiang Liu in the AIBA Asian Olympic qualifying event in Astana, Kazakhstan at 4:45 p.m. today.

The 23 year old Suarez completely out-boxed two-time Japanese national champion Daisuke Narimatsu to score a 24-11 win while Liu also scored a solid 18-6 win over Sabeeh Mahdi Al-Waaily Buraki of Iraq to set an eagerly anticipated showdown in the quest for gold and an trip to the Olympics.

Suarez narrowly edged Narimatsu in the opening round 4-3 but soon established his superior skills to take the second round by a 9-5 margin that gave the multi-titled Filipino a 13-8 lead entering the third and final round.

Suarez used his hand-speed and excellent movement to rip Narimatsu in the third round which Suarez dominated to win 11-3 and score a widely applauded 24-11 victory to the delight of Kazakhstan fans who have christened Suarez the ?Bombay Tiger.?

AIBA reported that Suarez ?grew in confidence to put one of his best performances so far in the competition.?

The Suarez-Narimatsu bout will be telecast on AKTV IBC 13 right after today's PBA game while today's final will be telecast immediately following Friday's PBA semi final game between Barangay Ginebra and BMeg Llamados.

Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines president Ricky Vargas who is in Kazakhstan told the Manila Standard that he saw Liu fight and believes ?we have a good chance, everything being equal.? Vargas added ?we are hoping and praying for the gold? which will make Suarez the second Filipino boxer to qualify for the Olympics, the other being light flyweight Mark Anthony Barriaga.

ABAP chairman and eminent businessman-sportsman Manny Pangilinan sent Suarez a message through ABAP executive director Ed Picson saying, ?Gusto ko siyang manalo para sa kanya at sa bayan. Prayers and good luck mamaya. Taos puso kaming nagdarasal dito. Regards to all out other boxers. There will be a next time for them.?

ABAP executive director Ed Picson said Suarez thanked the country?s pre-eminent sports patron Pangilinan and added ?he?s ready and focused. He?ll give it his all.?

Suarez had earned the semi final clash with Narimatsu following a spectacular 14-5 victory over Abdlay Uulu Anarbay of Kyrzgystan who was a bronze medalist in the last Asian Championships.

Even the AIBA website hailed the victory of Suarez in a banner story which read ?Suarez delights crowds with electric performance.?

If his win over Anarbay was electric Suarez? semi final win over the talented Japanese Narimatsu was nothing short of explosive with fight fans looking forward to a mouth-watering showdown against Chia?s Liu in the finals.

The 27 year old Liu who stands 5?10? established his domination of Buraki right in the opening round of his semi final clash in which he opened up a 5-1 lead and padded it even further by winning the second round by a 6-2 margin giving himself a 11-3 cushion entering the final round which Liu also won handily 7-3 for a final 18-6 tally.

Suarez earlier scored a spectacular 14-5 victory over Abdlay Uulu Anarbay of Kyrzgystan to enter the semi finals in the AIBA Asian Olympic qualifying event in Astana, Kazakhstan late Monday.

In a fight which the AIBA website headlined ?Suarez delights crowds with electric performance,? the classy Filipino completely out-boxed Anarbay who was a bronze medalist at the last Asian Championships and will face Japan?s talented two-time national champion Daisuke Narimatsu in the semi finals on Wednesday after a rest day on Tuesday.

Suarez, one of the outstanding boxers in the Mumbai Fighters Team of India in the AIBA World Series of Boxing who scored a stunning 3-0 shutout victory over World No. 4 ranked Semen Gribachev of Azerbaijan last March found the perfect fighting distance in the opening round against Anarbay and simply overpowered his hapless opponent who was considered a formidable opponent.
