CHARLY SUAREZ SCORES SPECTACULAR WIN, ENTERS SEMIS IN OLYMPIC QUALIFIERS By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 09 Apr 2012 Charly Suarez. Lightweight Charly Suarez, the last boxer standing in the Philippines quest for a berth in the London Olympic Games later this year has just scored a spectacular 14-5 victory over Abdlay Uulu Anarbay of Kyrzgystan who won a bronze medal in the Asian Championships last year and was regarded as a formidable opponent. Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines president Ricky Vargas who is in Kazakhstan for the Olympic qualifier to show his unwavering support told us a short while ago that Suarez will face Japan?s Daisuke Narimatsu in the semi finals and must win the gold medal to qualify for London. Suarez dominated Anarbay in the opening round which he won 4-1 and kept the pressure on his opponent in the second to completely outbox him to take the round by a 6-3 margin to enter the final round with a comfortable 10-4 lead. The flashy Suarez who is considered a little small for a lightweight used his terrific hand-speed and quick moves to dominate Anarby 4-1 in the third to register an impressive 14-5 victory. His semi final opponent on Wednesday, Japan?s Daisuke Narimatsu won a much closer 17-13 decision over Turkmenistan?s Pazzyyev. Narimatsu was held to an even 6-6 at the end of the opening round but took the second narrowly, 5-4 and won the third far more comfortably 6-3 for the final 17-13 tally. In the other semi final China?s veteran Qiang Liu a 15-12 winner over Asian Games silver medalist Enkhzorig Zorigbataar of Mongolia will clash with Iraq?s upset-conscious Sabeeh Mahdi Al-Waaily Buraki who beat Golara Faraoutan of Iran 17-11. Suarez earlier won his opening bout against tough Madadi Nagzibekov of Tajikistan by a fairly close 14-11 decision. The flashy Filipino lost the opening round 1-2 but came back in the second which he won 4-2 to give him a narrow 5-4 edge going into the final round against Nagzibekov. Suarez kept his composure to win the final round 9-7 to move into the showdown with Abdlay Uulu Anarbay for a place in the semi finals. Only the winner of the lightweight division will qualify for the Olympics. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
