Rodel Mayol to Fight "Tyson" Marquez for the WBA Flyweight World Title This Saturday in Sonora, Mexico

PhilBoxing.com

Former WBC light flyweight world champion Rodel Mayol, 30, will challenge hard-hitting Mexican slugger Hernan "Tyson" Marquez, 23, for the WBA flyweight world title this Saturday night (Sunday morning Manila Time) at the Centro de Usos Multiples in Ciudad Obreg?n, Sonora, Mexico.

Neutral WBA officials have already been named: supervisor Alberto Sarmiento of Venezuela. Referee Mark Nelson of the Minnesota, USA. Judges in charge of scoring are: Cesar Ramos of Puerto Rico, Enrique Portocarrero of Nicaragua and Octavio Rodr?guez of Panama.

Mayol, a prot?g? of Manny Pacquiao, had his last combat in October of last year. It was a 4th round technical KO victory over third class fighter Ernie "The Gladiator" Marquez (9-10-2, 3KOs) at the San Manuel Indian Casino in Highland, California.

However, Rodel Mayol (30-5-2, 22KOs) of Mandaue City, Cebu, has battled the best fighters in lower weight divisions, including Iv?n Calder?n of Puerto Rico, as well as Mexican stars Edgar Sosa, Ulises "Archie" Sol?s and Omar Ni?o.

Meanwhile, "Tyson" Marquez (32-2, 25KOs), who will be making his third title defense, received earlier this month the prestigious "Fighter of the Year" award during the annual WBA gala dinner in Panama.

Also in the same gala, Marquez won the "Fight of the Year" award for his thrilling epic battle with Luis "El Nica" Concepcion of Panama for the WBA flyweight world title last year.

A committed family man of humble origin who has the face of his son tattooed on his right arm, "Tyson" Marquez has said that he intends to fight for his family and country so as to defeat the Filipino Mayol and go on to unify the flyweight titles.

Tyson's only two loses have been at the hands of Filipinos Richie Nepranum and Nonito Donaire in March and September of 2010.

The Mexican Tyson Marquez of Empalme, Sonora as improved as a fighter since those defeats. However, it was apparent that the heavy-handed southpaw could have trouble with boxers of good movement, skills and speed.

The Marquez-Mayol fight will be a clash of youth and power versus experience and skills.

In addition, Marquez will be fighting in his own home state of Sonora, an area of much passion for boxing from where Orlando Salido, the exciting featherweight world champion hails from too.

Taking la Carretera Federal Highway, Tyson's home town, Empalme, with a population of fifty thousand, is only 90 minutes from Ciudad Obregon, the place of the combat. No doubt that Marquez will have a huge backing.

Not surprisingly, for boxing analyst in Mexico, "Tyson" Marquez, who is seven years younger than Rodel Mayol, is the heavy favorite to retain his world title.

But in boxing nothing is written and Mayol is a smart fighter with resources.

The question in the mind of boxing fans is what real physical condition will "Batang Mandaue" bring for this fight?

This author attended Mayol's last fight in the Philippines. It was combat against mediocre boxer Jayson Rotoni (12-11-1, 7KOs) last August at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.

Mayol was suppose to look so good against a poor opponent like Rotoni. But he did not. In fact, in round eight, a wild Rotoni caught Mayol with some good combination, which surprised and staggered Mayol. The more experienced Mayol used his obvious better skills to weather the storm and kept winning the rounds. The fight lasted the scheduled ten rounds.

The Rodel Mayol in questionable physical condition that we saw against Rotoni would certainly lose to Tyson Marquez.

Provided that Mayol is in excellent shape, the Filipino's chances to become champion again this Saturday night in Mexico will be based on a good game plan, good constant left jab, speed of hands and feet combined with head movement, attacks in combination on medium and long distance while making good use of his experience and knowledge of the ring and skills at counterpunching and score points and effective hands while avoiding the lethal damaging bombs thrown by the young Mexican warrior.

The Marquez-Mayol fight is organized by Zanfer Promotions and will be televised live on TV Azteca.
