BANAL BATTLES INDONESIAN IN SANDUGO BOXING By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Sat, 08 Jul 2006 Undefeated young fighter Alex John Banal of the ALA Stable meets his toughest test to date as he headlines the July 22 Sandugo Boxing at the Island City Mall carpark in Tagbilaran City opposite the unbeaten Indonesian Ali Rochmad. The event is part of the city's Sandugo Festival celebration, with the street-dancing activities happening the day after the fight, said Tagbilaran City Mayor Dan Neri Lim in an interview. This will be an exciting showdown between two undefeated warriors, with the Indonesian fighter enjoying an edge in both experience and power on paper. Rochman holds an unblemished mark of 12 wins, no defeat with 9 KO's, and is ranked no. 8 by the OPBF in the superfly ranks. A native of Surabaya, Rochman turned pro in 2001, and counts among his victims Cebu fighter Roselito Campana, who is an uncle of the young Banal, thus adding drama to this match-up. Rochman had beaten Campana by unanimous decision in 2004, and Banal is not one to let a kin's conqueror go unscathed. In his previous outing last Monday, Banal pulverized the veteran Jun Pader in the fourth round, this after somebody from ringside shouted that Pader had also beaten his uncle in the past. Pader defeated Campana on points in 2004 right in the latter's hometurf in Ermita, Cebu. Banal holds a perfect record of 7 wins, 1 draw with 6 KO's, and is out to snatch Rochman's OPBF rankings. In the chief support, RP no. 1 junior fly Along Denoy takes on Alex Guevarra in a non-title 10-round fight, while RP no. 1 superfly Robert Allanic takes on Danilo Pena in another 10-rounder. A special attraction will feature Honolulu, Hawaii's Van Oscar Penovaroff in a 4-round bout against Fernando Otic. The rest of the card pits Arnel Tadena versus Rodel Lamela; Rey Caitom versus Roel Lagonero; Danny Boy Bontilao against Jorge Dijos; Nic Banal versus Ranie Pamatian; Franklin Albia versus Rey Richard Del Valle. Also set in the card are: Lito Jalnaiz against Charlie Lamela; Leon Maratas against Esmael Mala; and Ricky Sismundo versus Jorie Muliet.
