STEVE CLAGGETT PICKED AS JUDAH SPARMATE By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Thu, 16 Feb 2012 Some fans who are not really that well-versed in the sweet science oftentimes look down on the value of young fighters who constantly hone themselves for fights by serving as ?sparmates?. ?Oh they are merely punching bags earning a living by getting beat up by the main guy?, they would say. However such description does not apply to Steve Claggett, the WBC Youth Intercontinental Light Welterweight Champion. The 22-year old Claggett hails from an Edmonton, Alberta, Canada a place better known for western summer shows like the Calgary Stampede and winter sports (the XV Winter Olympics was held there in 1988) rather than big time boxing. He sports a 13-1-1, 8KO record. But even with such atmosphere for the fight game in his home province Claggett managed to excel in the sport with the help of a very supportive trainer Eric de Guzman. De Guzman is a fast raising Filipino-Canadian trainer. Reports indicate that Claggett was recently hired by Team Zab Judah as one of the sparmates for Zab Judah ( 41-7-0 (28) as he trains for his fight against Vernon Paris (26-0-0,15KO). The Judah-Paris fight which is scheduled on March 24th at the Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn, NY is an ?eliminator? for the IBF Light Welterweight title. Judah will be training at the HIT Gym on the far end of the Las Vegas strip. It is there that he will endeavor to get in tip top shape with the help of the young Claggett. While at LasVegas, Claggett will stay with the amiable boxing trainer, Tony Martin. Martin is well known to Filipinos not only because he is married to a Pinay but also because he trains the ALA boxers when they are in Las Vegas, notably Mark Melligen. Claggett is expected to give Judah a handful. The two have sparred before at the gym in Las Vegas so Team Judah is familiar with what the young Canadian has to offer. Without a doubt Judah will be honed to the max by Claggett. On the other hand Claggett will learn lot of valuable experience training with a veteran like Judah.
