GARCIA WINS; GOMEZ FALTERS IN ROUND 5 OF 2012 AEROFLOT OPEN CHESS

FILIPINO International Master (IM) Jan Emmanuel Garcia subdued Hungrarian Woman International Master (WIM) Petra Pepp to stay on course in the fifth round of "Group B" division of 11th Aeroflot Open Chess Championships 2012 at the Hotel Cosmos in Moscow, Russia on Saturday.
Thus, Garcia raised his total 3 points, a good for share of 30th to 48th place in this 130 player's field.
However, countryman Grandmaster (GM) John Paul Gomez was yielded to WGM Swaminathan Soumya of India to remained on 1.5 points and was dropped into a tie for 100th to 118th place.
GM Emre Can of Turkmenistan routed overnight co-leader FM Sergey Grishchenko of Russia for his fifth straight wins in as many rounds and grabs the solo leadership board.
In the sixth round, Garcia will face IM Nguyen Van Huy of Vietnam while Gomez will meet FM Rakhim Pasiev of Russia.
