AMONSOT OFF PACQUIAO-LARIOS CARD; COMPLETE LINE-UP BARED
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Sun, 25 Jun 2006
Barely had the ink dried on reports detailing Czar Amonsot's inclusion on the July 2 Manny Pacquiao-Oscar Larios card than his opponent Silverio Ortiz started becoming 'too demanding' prompting organizers to shelve what would have been a terrific match-up.
Rex 'Wakee' Salud, the chief architect of the mammoth Mano-A-Mano undercard, explained that soon after Amonsot was announced to replace Randy Suico, the camp of Ortiz started sending feelers that they do not want to face a southpaw like Amonsot, indicating that they have prepared hard for an orthodox fighter like Suico.
Salud also stressed that Ortiz, who is the most expensive Mexican fighter on the card next only to Oscar Larios, did not seem too keen at facing a fighter of Amonsot's caliber, thus the cancellation.
As a result, the card's original 10-bout line-up now goes down to nine, although Salud assured that the quality of the bouts remain high.
Meanwhile, Salud also bared for the first time the final line-up of this 80-round boxing extravaganza, touted as the biggest event in the country in decades.
Aside from the mammoth Manny Pacquiao-Oscar Larios confrontation, set to see action is the undefeated Rey 'BoomBoom' Bautista who will take on Alejandro Felix Montiel in a 10-round event, while Gerry Penalosa battles the talented Tomas Rojas in another 10-round face-off.
Jimrex Jaca also goes up against Adrian Valdez in another tenner; while Russian Rustam Nugaev trades leathers with Filipino Dennis Laurente over eight.
The rest of the undercard pits Glenn Porras against Jerope Mercado (8 rds); Ernel Fontanilla versus Jundy Maraon (8 rds); Roel Laguna versus Dodie Boy Agrabio (6 rds); and Rechie Mepranum versus Efren Huesca (6 rds).
