DE MARCO WINS OVER LINARES / COMPLETE 'BELIEVE IT OR NOT!' RESULTS

PhilBoxing.com

Downtown Los Angeles:- While almost everyone has zeroed in on the weird ending of the Bernard Hopkins- Chad Dawson WBC Light-Heavyweight title fight, not much has been written about the undercard fights.

Thus in the spirit of presenting the total picture of the whole fight card, philboxing.com is hereby providing details that happened in the other fights.

There is no doubt that the undercard fights were far more entertaining than that of the much hyped Hopkins vs. Dawson.

Take for instance, the WBC lightweight title fight between the very capable spar-mate of the great Manny Pacquiao- Jorge Linares (31-2-0, 20K) of Venezuela and Antonio de Marco (26-2-1, 19KO) of Los Mochis, Mexico.

Linares who is trained by boxing guru Freddie Roach and his capable associate, Alex Ariza started the fight with crisp combinations, the trade mark of most Wildcard Gym prot?g?es. He led the fight in the first five rounds.

Sensing that he was getting behind, in the sixth round, de Marco started to rally. He opened a cut in the bridge of the nose of Linares which his corner surprisingly failed to manage and continued to bleed all through the fight.

Later in the fight during a torrid exchange in ring center, de Marco opened a cut on the right eye area of Linares. The cut compounded the troubles of his veteran cutman Joe Chavez. He had a heck of a time controlling two cuts and that did not help Linares at all. In fact, the bleeding appeared to have distracted Linares and he begun to lose ground as de Marco continued his onslaught.

At 2:32 of round 11 referee Raul Caiz Sr has seen enough and he stepped in to stop the fight. At that moment, Linares was ahead in all three score cards. But that did not help the young Venezuelan. He bowed to the Mexican warrior, Antonio de Marco.

In a title fight for the NABO Junior Welterweight title, veteran Kendal Holt (27-5-0, 15KO) of Paterson, NJ battled undefeated Danny Garcia (21-0-0, 14KO). It was a fight between two willing sluggers. Somewhere on round 3 Garcia landed a haymaker that shook Holt to his core. Holt from then on fought tentatively perhaps fearing that he may be KO?d. The fight went 12 full rounds with Garcia winning by split decision. Scores were 115-113,117-111 for Garcia and 115-113 for Holt.

Big mouth Paulie Malignaggi (30-4-0, 6KO)of New York won via a unanimous decision over 10 lazy rounds versus Orlando Lora (28-2-1,19KO) of Culiacan, Mexico. Although Malignaggi won most rounds, hard as he tried, he was not able to put Lora down, a testament to his ?powder puff? punches. Scores were 100-90, 98-92 and 99-91. Filipino Jony Davis was one of the judges.

Manuel Avila (6-0-0, 2KO) kept his record clean via a split decision over David Reyes (2-1-0) of East LA.

Dewey Bozella of Beacon New York who spent 26 years in prison before being release for a crime he never committed, made his pro debut against Larry Hopkins (0-3-0) of Houston, Texas. Bozella won via unanimous decision. Hopkins was penalized a point for throwing his poorly made mouthpiece several times during the end part of the fight.

The win of the 52 year old Bozella who is the former heavyweight champion of the infamous SingSing Prison in New York so inspired Oscar de la Hoya that he spoke about coming back to fight.

Other results:

Nick Casal (22-4-1, 17KO) of Niagara Falls, NY won a TKO in round 3 over Michael Anderson (11-1-1,9KO) of Newark, New Jersey.

Freddy Hernandez (30-2-0,20KO) won via a UD over Luis Collaz0 ( 31-4-0, 16KO) of Brooklyn, NY

In the curtain raiser, Donyll Livingstone (60-0, 3KO) .won via UD over Kutis Colvin (6- 1-0,5KO) of Austin, Texas
