Thoughts on Pacquiao-Marquez III

For claiming he won his first two fights with eight-division champion Manny Pacquiao, Mexico?s Juan Manuel Marquez might have gotten the ire of the Filipino ring icon.

The statements he has been circulating in the entire boxing world which he even dramatized by wearing t-shirts proclaiming his belief that, indeed, the judges denied him victories could have sealed the legacy of his boxing career.

The consensus, in fact, in their third encounter on November 12 is that, unlike in their first meetings that left more questions than answers, this completion of a historic trilogy could end up with the Mexican future Hall of Famer eventually hanging his gloves.

For no one believes that the now 37 year-old Marquez, also known as ?Dinamita,? has a chance to prove that Pacquiao?s split decision victory three years ago was a fluke. The consensus, in fact, is that the reigning pound-for-pound king will, this time, overpower JMM what with his overwhelming 8-1early edge among the Las Vegas odds makers. Knowing the Pacman as a kind-hearted man in and off the ring, a trait he showed against Antonio Margarito and Shane Mosley, who both showed respect to him and what he can do, but unforgiving and unmerciful to his big-mouthed and disrespectful rivals, such an end won?t be a remote possibility.

He showed this against the legendary Oscar DeLa Hoya, whom he forced into submission in eight rounds and eventual retirement the same year he last fought Marquez, and Ricky Hatton the following year in a savage second round stoppage. Both were quoted to have thrown unsavory remarks against the Filipino in many interviews before the fights.

?Kilala naman ako ng lahat, malambot ang puso kahit sa kalaban,? Pacquiao told this writer in an interview after his decision victory over Margarito. ?Ang sport na boxing naman ay hindi patayan. Entertainment din yan. Kailangan kaming mga boksingero pasayahin ang fans.?

?Pero kapag ang kalaban ay masama ang tubo ng dila at mapang-insulto sa kalaban. Dapat bigyan din ng leksyon, Kasi kapag ininsulto ako, nasasaktan din ang mga fans ko, lalo na ang mga kababayan natin. So para sila masayahan, pinaparusahan ko yung kalaban kong ganun ang ugali,? he said in another interview by way of giving hint as to what he will do in his November 12 encounter with Marquez.

?Tatlong taon na niyang sinasabi panalo siya sa dalawang laban namin. Na dinaya ko siya. Pero ang nakakalimutan niyang sabihin, kung hindi nagkamali ang isa sa tatlong judges sa pag-iskor, panalo sana ako at hindi tabla,? Pacquiao said in reference to the judge?s 10-7 verdict instead of 10-6 on account of the three knockdowns he dealt the Mexican during their 2004 bout that ended in a draw.

Four years later, the two met again and Pacquiao earned a split decision triumph on the strength of sending JMM kissing the canvas once in the third round.

?Again, he continued telling the whole world just to that I cheated him,? he lamented. ? So, even if inside me I know that there?s nothing more for me to prove and that I have already settled the score as far as my superiority over him is concerned, pumayag ako na harapin uli siya para ipakita na siya ang talo sa nakaraang laban naming.? Marquez will still be competitive in this third fight, no doubt about it, but facing an entirely new Pacquiao who has grown from a 130-pound fighter to a 147-pound mauler.

The 32-year-old Filipino ring idol, as usual. refused to give prediction except to say : ?Basta gagawin ko ang dapat gawin para mabigyan ng kasiyahan ang boxing public. Lalo na ang mga kababayan natin na sabik ding makita kung sino talaga ang mas mahusay na boksingero sa aming dalawa.?
