FLT Films to produce three Pacquiao movies

PhilBoxing.com

FLT Films International is back with a vengeance. The executive producer, Mommy Rose Flaminiano, told us she’s producing not only one but three movies about our boxing champ, Manny Pacquiao. The first one, simply titled "Pacquiao," is a co-production with Star Cinema and Manny Pacquiao himself.

"Pacquiao" will star Jericho Rosales under the direction of awarded director Joel Lamangan. But why get an actor to play Pacquiao when Manny (who’ve appeared in some movies in the past, the latest of which was "Lisensyadong Kamao" under Violett Films) can very well play himself onscreen and still the people will go see the movie because of him and not for the actor who’ll play him? This was our question.

Mommy Rose said it was her decision to get Jericho to play Pacquiao in her first movie about the champion of the masses. The choice of Bea Alonzo is Star Cinema’s. Mommy Rose added that for the next two Pacquiao films, Manny will be playing himself but with named actors as co-stars. In her first Pacquiao movie, with Jericho in the title role and Bea Alonzo playing Pacquiao’s wife Jinky, the champ will just be the narrator.

The Pacquiao filmbio is FLT Films’ comeback production after three years of inactivity. The outfit’s last movie was "You and Me Against the World," which starred Robin Padilla and Kris Aquino.

Mommy Rose explained about her hiatus from moviemaking: "When I decided to quit movie producing, it’s not because I had anything against it. It has always been in my mind na mag-produce muli. But my real estate business was keeping me busy. And it so happened na successful naman ito. Kaya, sabi ko, dito na muna ako."

How the Pacquiao movie came about

Mommy Rose was so busy with her real estate venture that she could not even find time to watch television shows. Until that fateful day, she revealed, when just to while her time away, she turned on her TV set in time for the tail-end of Manny Pacquiao’s bout with Mark Antonio Barrera.

"But it was not his victory that caught my attention then," Mommy Rose’s related. "Mas na-impressed ako when after his win, I saw the people milling around Manny tossed him up. Si Manny naman, with blood, tears and sweat streaming down his face had what I believed was kakaibang triumph habang kumakaway sa mga tao. At that moment, iba ang naramdaman ko."

When Mommy Rose finally met Manny (that was in November last year), there was instant rapport between them. Excited though he was, Manny however did not immediately accept Mommy Rose’s offer to translate into film his life story.

He reminded the lady producer that he had a forthcoming fight with Mexican champ Eric Morales. "Paano ho kung matalo ako ulit?"

Without batting an eyelash, Mommy Rose answered: "Hindi problema yan. Win or lose, paninindigan ko ang pangako ko sa ‘yo."

As to why Mommy Rose is co-producing the movie with Star Cinema, she said she’s been a "kapamilya" for as long as she can remember. She related: "I was at the auditorium where Manny’s bout with Morales was to take place. I was with Rudy Fernandez who is going to play a major role in the movie. We were looking for my secretary, who had my handbag with her. Gusto ko sanang tumaya sa pustahan in favor of Manny. Feeling exhausted, I sat beside a gentleman who was munching popcorn. He smiled at me and offered me to share with him his popcorn. I graciously said ‘thank you.’ In the course of our conversation, I learned that he was Mr. Cito Alejandro, president of ABS-CBN. When I mentioned to him the reason why I was watching Manny’s fight, he blurted, ‘kailangan kasosyo diyan ang ABS-CBN.’ Ito rin ang sinabi ni Mr. Gabby Lopez when he joined us."

With the number of movie producers who offered to co-produce the Pacquiao movie, Mommy Rose need not spend a centavo to make the movie. "Pero nangako ako sa ABS-CBN and I’m keeping that promise."

We learned that ABS-CBN will put up 30% of the budget.

"Since the day I conceptualized the project, everything fell into place smoothly. Maski kaliit-liitang bagay tungkol sa production. Halimbawa na lang tungkol sa first presscon for the movie. When I approached Crowne Plaza Hotel management about my wish to hold the presscon in the hotel, they offered to give me a discount more than I expected. San Miguel Corp. (which Manny will soon endorse), offered to give packages for giveaways to the movie press.

"Di pa man nagsisimula ang shooting ng pelikula, pakyaw na ang dalang suwerte," Mommy Rose declared.
