Filipinos Mark Magnifico Magsayo and Eumir Felix Marcial have done their jobs with impressive victories on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs Mario Barrios at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Saturday night (Sunday in Manila). It remains for Pacquiao to deliver the exclamation mark victory against Barrios to make it a 3-0 sweep for the Filipinos. Mark Magsayo of the Philippines took a wide unanimous decision win over the tough and sturdy Jorge Mata of Mexico in their 10-round super featherweight matchup. Judges scores were 110-90 (twice) and 98-92 all in favor of the Filipino former world champion Magsayo. ![]() Mark Magsayo (L) digs in to the body of Jorge Mata during their super featherweight fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Saturday (Sunday in Manila)>. Magsayo, with his fast hands and combinations, connected from a wide variety of shots and from all angles and busted Mata's nose early on but the game Mexican took all of it and more, not even a hint that he was going to go down. Mata in fact connected with hard right counters of his own to make the fight interesting and dangerous for Magsayo as it moved forward especially in the middle rounds when it appeared that Magsayo had punched himself out and got tired. Magsayo however, recovered nicely in the last three rounds to coast to victory probably resigning to the fact that he could not put the man in front of him down to the canvas. Magsayo now improves his record to 28-2-0, 18KOs while Mata, who was coming from five straight wins and fighting for the first time in the US, dropped to 21-3-2, 13KOs. ![]() Marcial (L) drops Joseph near the red corner.
