Jen Bautista defends her case PhilBoxing.com Wed, 15 Feb 2006 Jen Bautista admitted she was depressed for two whole days knowing that she somehow "failed" in her one moment of glory singing the National Anthem during the popular Pacquiao-Morales fight in Las Vegas, this, she disclosed to Manila Bulletin in a recent interview. "I cried for two days nung nalaman ko na hindi perfect yung pagkakanta ko sa ‘Lupang Hinirang.’ I was so depressed and disappointed sa sarili ko and the way the performance turned out. I was really blaming myself," revealed Jen. But this setback, she would later realize, was just the start of more difficult days ahead of her. As everyone knows, Jen would suffer the meanest from critics all over the country. She told us during our interview at Annabel’s Restaurant last Saturday, "Yung pinakanasaktan ako talaga ay yung inulit-ulit sa ‘TV Patrol’ yung part na yun na parang yun na lang ang ginawa ko sa buong kanta. I also Googled myself and found nasty remarks like ‘Jen Bautista is a downright embarrassment to our country.’ When I guested sa ‘Sis,’ may nagbubulungan pa don sa audience, ‘yan yung pumiyok….’ And as if hindi pa nakuntento, tinawag pa yung attention ko and said, ‘Miss, ikaw ba yung pumiyok sa laban ni Pacquiao?’ Ngumiti lang ako. May mga nagsabi pa nga na bad omen ang kanta ko sa laban ni Manny. Syempre nakaka-offend lalo na mali pa yung accusation, hindi naman ako pumiyok, flat lang. People can be so mean, kahit pa mga kababayan na natin." Jen said she was being congratulated all throughout the match for her rendition of "Lupang Hinirang." She explained, "I admit that I was nervous coming up the ring but when I heard our kababayans cheering Manny’s name over and over, I felt the adrenaline rush. That is why I shouted ‘Laban Pacman’ after the performance. It was a spur of the moment thing." The 23-year-old singer also revealed to the Bulletin that she didn’t try to sing any differently from what she practiced. "I was even singing on my way to the venue at naabot ko naman. Wala akong binago or itinaas na nota sa last portion gaya ng mga sinasabi nila. Ngayon na ginawa na ngang ring tone yung flat ko, narealize ko that it wasn’t that bad." According to Jen, she didn’t know her performance wasn’t perfect until she returned to her hotel room. "I didn’t know na may flat ako until I got back to the hotel and my brother informed me of it. The first thing that came to my mind was how people from the Philippines would react to it. The only thing that kept me going was Manny’s support. He told me, ‘Kung sino man ang mag-question sa’yo kung bakit ikaw ang pinili ko para kumanta ng National Anthem, sa akin mo ipakausap.’ I must admit that there are a lot of others more deserving than me para kumanta dun pero it was Manny who decided that I sing it and I wouldn’t want to pass on the opportunity." Manny saw Jen perform "Lupang Hinirang" at least three times during the bouts of other local boxers here in the country. Manny was the one who approached Jen and asked her to sing in his Las Vegas match. "I didn’t take it seriously at first but Manny’s offer came long before nag-express sila Lani Misalucha at Martin Nievera that they wanted to sing. We agreed on it months before he even left for the States." Jen stressed, "I didn’t volunteer to sing. In fact, I don’t know, up to now, how come Manny chose me for it. All I know is that I did my best and performed with all my heart. I apologized if I was a disappointment to some but I did everything I can." Jen is now being tagged as the Lucky Diva to which she somehow refuses to agree. "Hindi ko desisyon na matawag akong ‘lucky diva’ kasi ang connotation ng diva is someone na may superstar status. I’d rather earn the monicker and prove my worth first. Right now, I’m trying to move on with what has happened and I hope people will still give me another chance." Critics saying that Jen was chosen for the job because her grandfather and Senator Ramon Revilla are brothers. "Matagal na rin issue sa’kin yan na kaya raw ako nanalo sa contests or kaya ako nakakapag-showbiz ay dahil sa influence ng mga relatives ko. I believe it’s unfair for people to think that way but what can I do, kung si Manny na nga na nagbigay na ng karangalan sa atin ay may nasasabi pa rin ang mga tao tungkol sa mga intriga sa personal niyang buhay, sa akin pa kaya?" Jen continued that she is willing to defend Manny and his wife Jinkee in the same manner that they defended her. "I’ll be with Manny through whatever battle he may be fighting. For his wife, I know that times may be difficult but hold on, you know that Manny loves you very much," she ends. |
