World Title Shot in the Horizon for Cuello? By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Fri, 04 Mar 2011 Promoter Aljoe Jaro has been working long and hard to position his boxer, Denver ?The Excitement? Cuello for a world title shot. His efforts almost came into fruition last year if not for the ill-fated WBC minimumweight title eliminator in Mexico against Juan Hernandez wherein Cuello suffered a DQ loss when he already had Hernandez down. Jaro informed this writer that he wrote World Boxing Council secretary general Mauricio Sulaiman regarding a possible interim title fight involving Cuello here in the Philippines. Sulaiman replied that the WBC has discontinued the practice of having interim titles, and suggested staging a silver title bout against current WBC 105 lb silver titlist Ganigan Lopez of Mexico. Sulaiman also stated in his letter that newly crowned WBC world champion Kazuto Ioka will defend against Juan Hernandez and if Hernandez wins, a rematch would be great and if Ioka wins and goes ahead with his plan to move up in weight then Cuello could fight for the vacant title. Jaro feels that his fighter should have fought Oleydong Sithsamerchai for the world title as Denver was in a position to be a mandatory challenger. But fate had different plans as Oleydong was knocked out by Ioka last February. Cuello (25W-4L-6D, 15 KO?s) is scheduled to fight Samat Chaiyong of Thailand this March 26 Saturday at the Ynares Gym in Angono, Rizal. Denver in his recent bouts entered the ring bearing the name Cuello Singwangcha to honor Thai Promoter Naris Singwangcha who sponsors and co-promotes his fights. He won the WBC international title last April 2009 with a 4th round TKO win over Hiroshi Matsumoto of Japan. Cuello has stopped all four of his opponents since the disqualification setback. Cuello vs Chaiyong will be shown on GMA TV March 27 10 AM. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Rene Bonsubre, Jr.. |
