GORRES, AMONSOT IN VEGAS BOUTS TODAY By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Sat, 04 Feb 2006 Two of the country's most promising fighters see action today against separate opponents at the Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The OPBF's top-ranked contender Z "The Dream" Gorres and WBO Asia-Pacific super-featherweight boss Czar Amonsot will headline today's edition of the Friday Nite Fights promoted by Guilty Boxing. Gorres will face Mexican Jose Alfredo Tirado, while Amonsot battles it out against Cristian Favela at the Mardi Gras Ballroom of The Orleans. Both Gorres and Amonsot easily made weight during official weigh-in held yesterday at the fight venue. Gorres checked in at 116 lbs, while Tirado came in at 116.5 lbs at the weigh-in supervised by the NSAC in advance of today's 10-round non-title duel. Amonsot, the reigning WBO Asia Pacific super-featherweight titlist, scaled in at 133.5 lbs, while Favela barely made weight at 135 lbs, which is a pound over the contract weight. Filipino trainer Edito "Ala" Villamor reported that matchmaker Jimmy Montoya had allowed a one-pound allowance for Favela as he could no longer reduce any further after shedding off two pounds earlier. "For your information both the boys are very well conditioned, confident and relaxed. Both are ready to bring the fight to the Mexicans. After light training yesterday both scaled one pound over the fighting weight, perfect," said Las Vegas-based Brit Tony Martin, the amiable boxing trainer who arranged both fights for Gorres and Amonsot, in an interview yesterday. "The Filipino community here in Las Vegas will support the boys, it seems this promotion will be a sell out.I am really happy for Tony (Aldeguer),Sammy and the boys, as it really seems the doors will start to open for them. And who knows, Tony might just get a world champion, of which he so justly deserves," Martin added. Also in attendance at the weigh-in were WBO Asia-Pacific bantam boss Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista and WBO Asia Pacific chairman Leon Panoncillo as well as Michael Koncz. Gorres and Amonsot will take on their separate opponents today expected to draw inspiration from Manny Pacquiao's recent conquest of Mexican icon Erik "El Terrible" Morales.
