PhilBoxing.com

President Benigno ?Noynoy? Aquino III has acknowledged the significance of celebrating the 100th year of organized sports in the country which falls this year. The President commended the Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines for its project honoring and recognizing the heroics of Filipino athletes who brought honors to the country and the word Filipino in the international fields the past 100 years.

?By giving due recognition to the great Filipino athletes in your roster, to celebrate their dedication and inspiring vigor, as well as their significance in the history of Philippine Sports,? the Chief Executive son of the late Sen. Benigno Aquino and former President Cory Aquino said in a message sent to SCOOP president Eddie Alinea through assistant executive secretary John Michael Co and head of Malacanang?s correspondent office.
President Aquino was referring to SCOOP?s Century Sports Awards aimed at honoring 100 Great Filipino athletes from where it will name the ?Greatest Filipino Athletes of the Century in a grand Awards Night set sometime in May.
?I commend you for your efforts to enshrine the legacy of our athletes, who count among or modern-day heroes, for they have contributed much to our country?s glory,? P-Noy?s message stressed.

?These athletes have truly given meaning to the ?play for everyone? slogan of the Philippine Amateur Athletic Federation that SCOOP has adopted,? the President added.
?It was in the creation of the PAAF in 1911 that opened for the Filipino athletes in both the amateur and professional ranks the gate to strut their wares against the best in Asia and the world starting with their domination of the Far Eastern Games, forerunner of the now Asian Games, two years later and boxer Pancho Villa?s becoming the first from the country and Asia to win a world boxing championship.
?As we walk o the straight and righteous path to our nation?s transformation, I urge you (SCOOP) to continue upholding the discipline and commitment that have been demonstrated time and again in the field of sports,? the President, a shooting enthusiast, said in his message.

?This is not just about breaking records and winning medals, but also withstanding the challenges and trials on the road to victory,? he continued. ?Let us all work as one team, illuminated by the era of daylight as we aim for the lofty prize of a better, more progressive Philippines,? the President Noynoy said.
The SCOOP Century Sports Awards is designed to be a night for the ages, which, is our association?s share in the celebration of this historic event, a grand party of the millennium which will trace the heroics of the finest 100 athletes the country had produced since organized sports was established through the creation of the now-defunct PAAF.

The Awards Night is a product of years of research and examination of sports from the time Regino Ylanan did the country proud by scooping up three gold medals in the inaugural staging of the Far Eastern Games by ruling the shot put, discus throw and pentathlon events, in the process crowning himself Asia?s first ?Man of Steel.?

And up to the present era of Manny Pacquiao, the only man to win eight world boxing titles in as many weight divisions, earning for him the world?s pound-for-pound king. From among this list of 100 Greats will come the athlete will be crowned ?The Greatest Filipino Athlete of the Century.?

The SCOOP?s Council of Leaders, composed of the association?s past surviving presidents ? Beth Celis, Al Mendoza, Barry Pascua, Jimmy Cantor, Andy Sevilla, Ron delos Reyes and Bill Velasco as well as senior sports editors and leading columnists to be named later will come up with the final list of nominees.
