Codinera at SCOOP By Eddie Alinea PhilBoxing.com Sun, 23 Jan 2011 The man who helped University of the East win its last UAAP men?s basketball championship 25 years ago vowed to to bring the Warriors back to their glory days in the 60s up to the 80s. Jerry Codinera, who along with Allan Caidic and Boysie Zamar, to mention a few, powered the Warriors to that 1986 title conquest, yesterday said he would like to see his alma mater on top of the UAAP world again that when his contract as new UE coach expires three years from now. ?It?s a little bit tough job if you ask me, kasi we have to start from the scratch. But since I accepted the job, I might as well do my best to realize the reason why the school management took me as coach,? Codinera declared during yewsterday?s SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session at the kamayan Restaurant-Padre Faura. Codinera, called the ?Defense Minister? during his playing days in the professional Philippine Basketball Association because of his defensive brand of style, said he already has lost five of last season?s mainstays, two on graduation and three on injuries. Paul Lee, the Warriors? top scorer last year still has a year to play by opted out for reasons he only knows, Codinera, a member of the PBA defensive team seven times, the most by any player, revealed during the forum, sponsored by TV-5, Mang Inasal and FILA Sportswear. ?I?m not privy to his (Lee?s) plans. Eh career nya yun, kaya wala akong magagawa kung ayaw na niyang maglaro sa UE,? the owner of an all-time record 11 block shots in the pro-league, said, adding he heard that the former ?King Warrior? intends to play for the national team in reference to Smart Gilas squad. ?But I believe I can build a strong, competitive team. Me open tryout kami, meaning yung me gustong maging member ng team puedeng pumunta sa Tanduay gym at magpakita kung ano ang magagawa nila. Pag nagustuhan namin, okey.? He admitted though that getting good players nowadays look hard with at least two teams ready to spend fortunes buying players to beef up their lineup. ?Me? I believe dun sa pangaral sa amin ng Tatay ko (baseball/softball great Filomeno ?Boy? Codinera) na ang magagaling na player sa anumang sport, hindi nakukuha sa pera. Kailangan practice. There?s no substitute for training,? he philosophized. ?Okey naman ang lineup ko. Last Saturday in our game agfainst La Salle sa Father martin Cup, nanalo kami. Eh alam naman natin na ang La Salle is one of the strongest teams in the coming UAAP season along with Ateneo and FEU (Far Eastern U),? he said. ?In other workds, me ibubuga ang team ko.? Codinera, mentored the Teletech team for one season in the PBL besides acting as assistant mentor of Air 21 in the PBA and University of the Philippines last year, said his plan is to transform the Warriors from a purely offensive team, which they were known the past several seasons, to a running, defensive side. ?As a center when I was still playing, my job is to defend the paint, grab those rebounds to set the stage to transition plays.? ?At tingin ko may mga material naman ako. We?ll see in this coming days.s We will be participating in all summer tournaments sehcduled this coming months at makaikita ko doon kung saan makakarating ang team ko,? he said.
