NIETES DEFENSE UPDATE
By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Fri, 14 Jan 2011
?Will it be in the Philippines or Las Vegas??
The official word from ALA Promotions as of this writing is that they are still negotiating the venue for Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes' fifth title defense. They would like to have the fight with Raul Garcia of Mexico held here in the Philippines. Nietes himself has said time and time again that he would like to defend in Bacolod City or Cebu.
Boxing pundits have been talking about Nietes' defense; a Vegas fight is great but he also needs to develop his fan base here in the country.
Nietes won the WBO minimumweight title in 2007 at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City and he also had his first title defense at the same venue in 2008. Since 2009, he has fought three times in Mexico and had a non-title bout in Pasay City last year.
The 28 year old Nietes was at ringside watching Rey ?BoomBoom? Bautista and his other ALA stablemates last Saturday at the I.T. Park. He told this writer he has begun only with light training and has not yet started heavy sparring for his scheduled defense in March.
