BOOM BOOM BAUTISTA HAS DEVELOPED MORE SKILL By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 13 Jan 2011 As former world title challenger Rey ?Boom Boom? Bautista steps up his training for an eagerly awaited rematch with Mexico?s Alejandro Barrera, Bautista?s strength and conditioning coach sees a lot of improvement in the all-action fighter. Pio Solon who has been working with the leading fighters in the ALA Gym told the Inquirer that Bautista ?seems to have learned more skill and hopefully will be able to counter more? in his showdown with Barrera at the Waterfront Hotel & Casino in Cebu on January 29. Solon told the Inquirer that he believes improvement in Bautista?s skills ?will define the fight? in ?Boom Boom?s? ten round featherweight clash against the cousin of Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera. Bautista won what some ringside fans claimed was a controversial 4th round TKO when the fight was stopped after Barrera was ruled unfit to continue by the ring doctor following a nasty cut on his right eye. Referee Tony Pesons ruled the cut was caused by a legitimate punch which appeared to be reinforced by the slo-mo television replay that showed Bautista catching Barrera in an accidental clash of heads on the opposite side to where the cut was inflicted. The end came at 1:14 of the fourth round. Barrera?s corner protested the decision and asked for a rematch which ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer and Bautista himself readily agreed to. With the win the 24 year old Bautista improved his record to 29-2 with 22 knockouts while the 31 year old Barrera dropped to 21-4 with 14 knockouts. Barrera has vowed to avenge his defeat while Bautista has said he will do his best to prove he deserved to win their first fight. Barrera is coming off a 5th round knockout of Arturo Hernandez on October 22 last year while Bautista hasn?t fought since the first encounter with Barrera on August 28 last year. Bautista has won three straight bouts, one by knockout and two by TKO since suffering a disappointing loss to Heriberto Ruiz on November 22, 2008. It was later discovered that Bautista had a rotten bone in his left wrist which caused terrible pain during the fight. The infected bone was removed and replaced by a piece of bone from Bautista?s hip. Respected boxing patron Tony Aldeguer said Bautista has recovered well since he underwent surgery and his hand has completely healed and he?ll be ready for Barrera.
