VILLANUEVA TO DEFEND WBO ORIENTAL TITLE AGAINST BILLY DIB By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 04 Jan 2011 Lorenzo Villanueva. WBO Oriental featherweight champion Lorenzo ?Thunder Volt? Villanueva is scheduled to defend his title against Billy ?The Kid? Dib at the Joondalup Arena in Perth, Western Australia on March 12. Well-known Victorian promoter and host of the popular TV show, ?KO Boxing? in Australia, Peter Maniatis informed the Inquirer that the fight will be staged by LDL Boxing Promotions and that Dibb had wanted a good Filipino opponent after scoring a string of victories against Filipino fighters. In his last bout against a Filipino, Dib scored a 4th round knockout over Jack Asis and followed it up with a 6th round TKO over Australian Mick Shaw to register four KO?s and 2 TKO?s in his last six fights. The 25 year old Dib has a record of 30-1 with 18 knockouts. His only loss was in a WBO title fight to then champion Steven Luevano in Atloantic City on October 18, 2008 in a fairly close fight. Villanueva is a solid puncher from the Braveheart Boxing Gym of former North Cotabato governor Manny Pinol whose fighters are now under the promotional arm of ALA Promotions headed by its president Michael Aldeguer. A tall southpaw Villanueva is undefeated with a record of 18-0 with 17 knockouts. He won the WBO Oriental title with a 10th round TKO over veteran Eric Canoy on July 4, 2009. Villanueva scored two big wins last yearwith a 2nd round knockout of Eric Macas on February 14 and a 7th round TKO over world title challenger Balweg Bangoyan on August 1, 2010. Dib is rated No. 5 by the IBF and No. 12 by the WBA while Villanueva is ranked No. 5 by the WBO. Maniatis said he would make sure that Villanueva who will earn $US5,000 for his first fight abroad and be given three roundtrip tickets for himself, Pinol and his trainer, will get a fair decision fromn the judges.
