'Pamaskong Handog' racing classic starts Monday By Eddie Alinea PhilBoxing.com Sun, 05 Dec 2010 Riders who could have easily made it to the national team to the last Asian Games head the impressive list of participants in the coming National Open Cycling Championships starting Monday at the Amoranto Velodrome in Quezon City. Former Marlboro Tour champions Warren Davadilla and Arnel Quirimit, among those left out of the Asiad squad due to politics will actually spearhead the campaign in the 170-kilometere road race slated Dec. 11 from Quezon City to Mabitac in Laguna and back to Quezon City, announced organizing committee chair Emmet Penson during yesterday's SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session at the Kamayan Restaurant-Padre Faura. Southeast Asian Games medalists Nilo Estayo, Alvin Binosa and Eboy Quinones, who, too, could have salvaged a medal or two in the recent Guangzhou Games had they been included in the line up, are also among the elite entries in the six-day affair held under the auspices of the Intergrated Cycling Federation of the Philippines. As envisioned by ICFP president, Dr. Philipi Juico, the races is a sort of "Pamaskong Handog ng ICFP Sa Siklistang Pilipino" in the advent of the Holiday Season. "This is the reason why we are inviting all cyclists regardless of faction to register and join the races so they will have a chance to earn something for the christmas season," Penson said. "Wala na munang politika dito. Ito ay para sa mga siklista, kaya tinatawagan namin sila ng pansin na lumahok." Penson disclosed during the session, sponsored by TV-5, Mang Inasal and FILA. that the first four days of the multi-event classic will be confined to the track races at Amoranto. Monday will see the participants try their luck in the 1-km. individual time trial and individual and team pruit for men and 600-meter individual time trial for women. "Heats in sprint events as well as the 800-meter, 1,600-meter, and 4,800-meter massed steart races are scheduled Tuesday, Dec. 7, " Penson, who came to the public service forum accompanied by ICFP legal counsel Sammy Estimo said. The affair moves to the Timberland race circuit in San Mateo town in Rizal Province on Dec. 8 for the all the mountain bike events. The final races in all track events will be held Dec. 9 at Amoranto. The centerpiece road race starts in front of the Quezon City Hall and will proceed all the way to Mabitac via the mountainous Antipolo City terrain before ending up at Amoranto. Special races involving cyclin greats like Olympians ben Evangelista Rolando Guavez and Bert Roxas along with veteran internationalists Cesar Filosopo, Rufo Dacumos and Joselito Santos, to mention a few, are scheduled to be held at Amoranto as side events while waiting for the road race to arrive.
