Tapales overcomes Olisa and Fever in 'Paboksing sa Araw ng Glan' By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Thu, 07 Oct 2010 Philippine light flyweight champ Marlon Tapales of the Black Scorpion Stable of Lanao del Norte outboxed and outfought top R.P. jr.bantamweight contender Richard Olisa of the Aljoe Jaro Stable in the main event of a fight card held Wednesday in the municipality of Glan, Sarangani Province. It was a battle of two southpaws and Tapales immediately sent a message in the opening round when he stunned Olisa with a right hook. Tapales was fighting two weight divisions higher but still had the edge in the power and accuracy department. Olisa tried to pin Tapales on the ropes but Tapales showed his ability to fight from a defensive posture. As the rounds progressed, Olisa bled from a cut on the right eyebrow. Tapales evasive head movement made him avoid Olisa's attempts to land a hard shot that would've turned around the fight. The scores were unanimous 98-92, 96-94 and 98?92 for Tapales. Tapales (14W-1L,4 KO's) won the R.P. 108 lb division by 7th round TKO over Warlito Parrenas last April in front of his hometown fans in Tubod, Lanao del Norte. This was a non-title bout and Olisa drops to 20W-13L-2D, 9 KO's. Top photo: Marlon Tapales (R) who has a fever fought defensively but outboxed and outpointed Richard Olisa during their fight Wednesday night in Glan, Sarangani Province. Tapales wins. The bout was actually in danger of being cancelled as Tapales was nursing a fever a few hours before fight time. Tapales was given the green light when his fever went down and he showed the ability to fight through adversity. For the supporting bouts: Mark Anthony Geraldo (19W-2L-3D, 10 KO's) of Valencia, Bukidnon won by 8th round TKO over Ricardo Roa (6W-4L-2D, 1 KO) of Manila's Aljoe Jaro Stable. It was also a fight between two superflyweight southpaws who showcased their scientific boxing skills. It was a battle of feints, jabs and counters until Geraldo exploded with a solid left that hurt Roa who staggered to his corner. Geraldo pounced on the opportunity and landed a brutal barrage prompting the referee to stop the fight at the 2:29 mark. Mark Anthony Geraldo (L) and Ricardo Roa. Jog Alim (10W-4L-1D, 7 KO's) of the Vic Adriano Stable of Davao won by 7th round TKO over RJ Anoos (4W-2L-1D, 1 KO) of the RWS Stable of Cebu in their featherweight scrap. Ano-os was slightly ahead when he worked behind a stiff jab and one-two combos. But a quick uppercut sent Ano-os face down on the canvas. He was still wobbly when he got up prompting the stoppage at the 2:53 mark. Jog Alim waits in a neutral corner as RJ Anoos tries to beat the count. Marlon Alta (8W-2L, 6 KO's) of Maitom, Sarangani knocked down Romnick Rapista (3W-20L-1D, 2 KO's) thrice in the first and the referee signalled the end at 1:49 of the opening round. Rapista was substituting for the injured Naozumi Tsuchiyama of Japan. In what would be the most dramatic fight of the night, Rolando Navarette,Jr (2W-1L-1D, 2KO's)of Gensan lost by 6th round knockout to Don King Tampus (4W-3L-1D, 1KO) of the Tony Dacer stable of Davao. His father Rolando Sr., the former WBC superfeatherweight champion, was standing behind his corner giving instructions. Roland Navarette Jr (L) mixing it up with Don King Tampus. Former world champion Rolando Navarette Sr (in stripes) watches his son fight at ringside. Tampus had Navarette on the defensive in round 2. In the third, Navarette was visibly fading and was at the receiving end of a vicious volley that sent him down to the canvas. Navarette was helpless and spent but the fight continued into the third round with Tampus landed a frightening series of unanswered punches. The referee had good reason to stop the fight at this fight. In any other venue, with any other boxer, it would have been halted. But the image of the former champion loomed large in this building. Before Manny Pacquiao, Navarette,Sr., known as the Bad Boy from Dadiangas, was the most charismatic fighter this region produced. The younger Navarette tried to fight back in the fifth. The elder Navarette continued to yell instructions behind his corner. He actually had the round won in two judges' cards. But Tampus came back strong in the 6th and final round with one-two combos despite bleeding from acut on the left eyebrow. Tampus then pushed an exhausted Navarette down. He no longer had the strength to bring himself up prompting the referee to initiate the ten count and Navarette was counted out at the 2:08 mark. Christian Saga (3W-1L, 2KO's) of the RWS Stable of Cebu suffered his first loss to Rocky Sardido (8W-10L-4D, 23KO's) of the Vic Adriano stable of Davao who scored a fifth round TKO win. It was fight marred by low blows and a point was deducted from Saga in the 4th. In the 5th round, Saga went down due to a bdy blow, he claimed it was a low blow but Saga's corner signalled that their boxer could no longer continue at 2:53 of the round.
