AT THE STAPLES IN L.A.- UNDERCARDS OUTSHINE THE MOSLEY-MORA MAIN EVENT

Canelo Alvarez downs Carlos Baldomir.

Golden Boy Promotions promised a sizzling fight card and a bombshell of a main event.

They were only partial right.

Tonight at the Staples Center in downtown LA, Shane Mosley (46-6-1,39KO) and Sergio Mora (22-12,6KO) headlined a fight card celebrating Mexico?s 200 Year Anniversary. But their jaded fight was a disappointment. It was far from the bombshell GBP promised it to be. In fact, as early as the middle of round one, the crowd was already booing Mosley and Mora for their poor showing. If it were not for the undercard fights, it would have been a lousy fight night.

Mosley (L) tags Mora.

Mora apparently was just there to collect what remained of his purse which was drastically cut by the CSAC for coming three pounds over the limit at the weigh-in yesterday. Mosley on the other hand was so desperate for a good showing that he kept on chasing Mora hoping perhaps to land a lucky punch and end the fight spectacularly. But Mora was no where to be found the whole night.

In the end, the fight ended in a monotonous draw with the scores as follows: 115-113 (Mora), 116-112 (Mosley) and a 114-114 tie.

As mentioned above, the undercard fights were totally opposite the main event. There were knock-outs galore.

Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez, (34-0-1, 26KO) the red-head from Guadalajara, Mexico stopped the very tough ex-champion, Carlos Baldomir (45-13-6,14KO) of Argentina. Alvarez relied heavily on his combinations.

The fight started rather fast with the young Mexican seemingly too fast for the wily Argentinian. The first three rounds were exciting with each fighter landing their share of hard punches. Later down the line, Baldomir decided to up the tempo and begun standing toe-to-toe with Alvarez. Alavarez landed a counter left that landed flushed on Baldomir?s chin sending him crashing to the canvas face first. The fight ended at 2:58 of round 6th.

Victor Ortiz KOs Vivian Harris.

In the battle between two sluggers both named ?Vicious?, Victor Ortiz ( 28-2-1, 22KO) of Oxnard, CA kayoed that Vivian Harris ( 29-5-1,19KO)of Guyana who now makes Brooklyn, New York his home.

Ortiz proved too fast and too strong for Harris, knocking him down three times in the second round and finishing him off in round three. Time: 0:45 seconds.

Ponce de Leon sends Antonio Escalante to the canvas.

Daniel Ponce de Leon, (40-2-0,33KO) the ex-WBO featherweight champion knocked-out fast raising Antonio Escalante( 23-3-0-15KO). The end came at 2:20 on round 3.

In one of the more exciting non-televised fight Frankie Gomez (6-0-0,6KO) kept his record immaculate by knocking out the Ricardo Calzada (2-3-0-1KO).

David Rodela (15-3-3,6KO) and Juan Manuel Montiel fought to a majority draw with the scores as follows: 59-55,57-57. and 57-57.

In the lone women?s fight, Kaliesha West ( 13-1-2,4KO) won the vacant Women?s WBO bantamweight title via a KO over the very tough Angel Gladney.(6-3-1,5KO) The end came at 0:59 seconds in round 7th.

Junior Middleweight Keith Thurman (14-0-0,13KO) kayoed Quandary Robertson (15-1-0, 10KO) at 2:40 of round 3.

Sharif Bogere ( 17-0-0, 11KO) dropped Julian Rodriguez (17-20-4,11KO) in the with a vicious left hook to the side of the head in the second round. Rodriguez beat the count but he was very wobbly leading the referee to wave off the fight at 1:43 of the round.

Bogere wins over Julian Rodriguez.

Eric Arreola (1-1-0) won a majority decision over Missael Nunez (4-9-2) with the scores as follows: 40-36, 40-36 and 38-38.
