CHARGIN?S PLAN FOR GESTA - IS IT HUGE ENOUGH TO LURE KATSIDIS? By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Mon, 23 Aug 2010 After Mercito Gesta showed ?no mercy? for Genaro Trazancos and knocked him out after toying with him for 6 plus rounds last Friday night at the open air amphitheater of the Casino del Sol at Tucson, Arizona promoter Don Chargin informed Gesta?s trainer, Vince Parra that he has huge plans for the Filipino slugger in the very near future. Gesta is set to fight again in late September or early October in San Diego against yet an unmanned opponent to defend his NABO crown. Gesta?s next fight is important and the Team is looking forward to it. A resounding victory in that fight hopefully will pave the way for a big fight with the Austalian banger, Michael Katsidis. ?Mercito came out from tonight?s fight relatively unscratched save for a little bump on the bridge of the nose as a result of an accidental head butt. We will give him a two week R and R and then we will be back again to the gym to resume training for his title defense,? Parra informed. ?Katsidis is really who we want to show that Mercito is now ready for the big time,? Parra told this writer at Tucson as we walked towards Denny?s Restaurant for a really late dinner. ?Hopefully, Don Chargin and the Golden Boy Promotions can put their act together again like they did tonight and lure Katsidis for face Gesta,? he added. Putting together a Gesta-Katsidis very late this year or early next year will really be difficult at best. It will take all the expertise of the Chargin-GBP tandem to get the Austalian in the ring with the fast raising Gesta. It will also take a whole lot of cash. Back at Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico in one of the conversations we had with Katsidis? front man Sampson Lewkowicz, a few days ago, we were told by the ?Picasso? in match-making that for Katsidis, a Gesta-Katsidis fight will be a ?high risk-low return? bout. ?It is far from happening? Lewkowicz told us. ?We would not gain much from it. Katsidis is already a big draw but unfortunately, I can not say that for Gesta yet,? he continued. But then again, in boxing, ?never? really do not mean ?never?. If the pegs fall in their right places, so to speak, a Gesta-Katsidis can happen. Indeed it can but it will take a huge offer from Chargin and GBP to lure Katsidis. They can always dangle an offer he can not refuse and I am sure if it?s big enough to be worth second look, Lewkowicz may change his mind. But until then, the best Team Gesta can do is wish. Nothing wrong with that because at the rate the young man from Cebu is going, pretty soon Katsidis will have no choice but to man up and face the guy particular if the offer is exceptionally good. Many pundits and boxing fans say that it?s too early for Gesta to face Katsidis this year or even next year. In fact others are saying it will be tantamount to ?feeding him to the lions?. Team Gesta however, begs to disagree, particular trainer Vince Parra. ?To me Mercito is ready for the big time particularly for Katsidis. The Australian?s forward moving style fits Mercito?s efficient counter punching. It will be one hell of a fight - one that we strongly feel we can win otherwise I would not even talk about it,? Parra indicated. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ed de la Vega, DDS. |
