DONAIRE PROVIDES BIG BOOST TO RP AMATEUR BOXERS

PhilBoxing.com

WBA super flyweight interim champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire has provided a big boost to the Philippine amateur boxers in the national pool who will begin their training camp at the University of San Francisco Koret Health and Recreation Center on August 21.

The head coach of the University of San Francisco boxing team, Angelo Merino who is originally from Cebu has arranged sparring sessions, clinics and a tryout for Fil-American amateur boxers during the four days that they will play host to the Philippine delegation.

The RP national pool received a big boost from Donaire even before their US stint takes off when the former IBF/IBO flyweight champion who won the title with a spectacular 5th round, one punch knockout of Vic Darchinyan on July 7, 2007 offered the use of the Undisputed Gym in San Carlos where Donaire trains for his fights under former world champion Robert Garcia and Filipino assistants Jonathan Penalosa and former two division world champion Dodie Boy Penalosa.

Donaire offered the use of the gym as well as his top-class training staff for free as his contribution to the ABAP campaign for the Asian Games. He is also arranging health supplements for the boxers which they can use until the Asiad.

Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines executive director Ed Picson informed us that Candy Lopez, a former US Olympic coach and Dr. Ronald Mitchell, a chiropractor who specializes in sports medicine will conduct seminars for the team which is made up of the 7 male and 4 female boxers.

A program is also being drawn up by Mike Martino, executive director of USA Boxing (ABAP's US counterpart) for sparring with US boxers and more clinics with American coaches and training experts. Mr. Martino, aside from being USA Boxing executive director, also heads the boxing
program of the University of Nevada in Reno.

ABAP is still confirming the schedule of Rodrigo Mosquera, the noted amateur boxing coach of the Eddie Heredia Gym in LA where Oscar de la Hoya trained as an amateur en route to winning an Olympic gold medal.

The women boxers will head straight for Bridgetown, Barbados after the US stint for the Women's World championships slated Sept 6 to 19.

Aside from Picson others joining the US trip bankrolled by PLDT are coaches Roel Velasco and Pat Gaspi, senior coaches Nolito Velasco and Ronald Chavez and boxers Charly Suarez, Annie Albania, Joegin Ladon, Delfin Boholst, Victorio Saludar, Gerson Nietes, Rey Saludar, Recky Dulay, Josie Gabuco, Alice Kate Aparri and Nesthy Petecio. Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) Women's Commission member Karina Picson will accompany the women boxers.

The delegation leaves via Philippine Airlines on August 19. ABAP president Ricky Vargas and Secretary-General Patrick Gregorio are scheduled to follow later.
