MARQUEZ HAS A GOOD WIN BUT NOT SPECTACULAR By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Sun, 01 Aug 2010 ![]() Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas, NV:- Golden Boy Promotions was hoping the Marquez-Diaz II will duplicate the first fight between two valiant gladiators, Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz. It would have done wonders for GBP as well as for Marquez and Diaz But alas, it was not meant to be. Tonight Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz were supposed to put up a show well worth being considered another fight of the year. However, often times in boxing the results don?t always come out as expected. Sure Marquez won by a wide unanimous decision. It would have been nice if a KO occurred. But it did not. With such a performance, Marquez?s claim for a spot against Manny Pacquiao did not gain any ground. In fact, it may have lost some grounds. Had Marquez end up with a scintillating knock-out over Diaz like the first time they fought, no one can say that he truly deserves a rubber match with Manny Pacquiao. But he did not. With the results tonight, it would not be surprising if Pacquiao will ignore Marquez?s plea for a third fight. Why should Pacquiao give him another shot when Marquez was not even able to duplicate his feat against Diaz? The best for Marquez now is for him to clean up the lightweight divison. Perhaps it may even be a good idea for him to meet Jorge Linares of Venezuela, the new WBA Lightweight champion. Linares won his crown with a victory over Rocky Juarez tonight on the undercard fights. With an emphatic win over Linares, maybe just maybe, Pacquiao may decide he will be a good one to retire with, perhaps at a catch weight of 145 lbs.
