VILORIA?S MANAGER SAYS IT'S ON TO BIGGER AND BETTER THINGS FOR BRIAN By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 12 Jul 2010 The manager of former two-time world lightweight champion Brian Viloria says it's ?on to bigger and better things? for the fighter who returned to the ring last Saturday after a stunning IBF title loss to Carlos Tamara of Colombia and won a ten round split decision over Omar Soto after moving up in weight to fight at 112 pounds. In a post fight interview, Viloria told us he would likely return to the ring in October or November with a fight which would almost surely be held abroad. Gittelsohn told us that the important thing was that Viloria ?shook the cobwebs off and got the monkey off his back? which to many fight fans is the first step in putting his career back on track. Gittelsohn said he was in New York when the fight took place at the Ynares Sports Center and he received round by round updates from Solar Sports Peter Chanliong and was ?almost floored when I received the news that it was a split decision win for Brian.? Viloria?s manager inquired who Epi Almeda, the judge who scored the fight 97-93 for Soto is and asked whether it was ?a mistake or did he really see it that way.? We ourselves were shocked at Almeda?s scorecard and so were many fight fans who couldn?t understand how he could have effectively given six rounds to Soto and only four to Viloria when Viloria controlled the first five rounds which even Soto conceded and won the last round which in fact was Viloria?s best round in the fight. The two other judges Edwin Sese and Roberto Canlas both scored the fight for Viloria 97-93 which meant an incredible eight point swing between the judges. Soto himself told us he thought the fight was much closer than the scorecards of the judges indicated. Among those who watched the fights at special ringside were pound-for-pound king and ?Fighter of the Decade? Congressman Manny Pacquiao, his lovely wife Jinkee and Congressman Patrick Antonio. Before the fight Pacquiao visited Viloria in his dressing room to wish him the best of luck while Jinkee said they watched the fights to support Viloria.
