CLASSY MAYOL WINS SOME MEXICAN FANS

Some reports in the past indicated that Mexican fans hate Mayol and have branded him 'a dirty fighter'.

Mayol being branded as such apparently was an off-shoot of the accidental head that Edgar Sosa suffered in his title defense against Mayol. As a result of the head butt Sosa broke his cheek bone and subsequently was 'knocked-out' thus losing his title to the hard-hitting Filipino.

Mayol being branded as dirty by the Mexican fans in a way was understandable.

But from Team Mayol?s perfective, it was more of a gut reaction at that moment because their boxer was severely injured and in the process lost his crown.

Well, that was then and this is now.

After Mayol was illegally knocked?out by Omar Nino Romero, Mexicans realize that the incident with Sosa was not really that bad. Well, at least compared to what Nino did to Mayol.

So many put the Sosa incident on the back burner and decided to move on.

Mayol?s early trip to Queretaro was a huge advantage not only in terms of getting acclimated to the weather and getting used to the high altitude, but gaining PR points as well.

After barely 4 days of getting to know him up close and personal, Mexican fans found out that really, the boxer we all know as ?Batang Mandaue? was indeed a very nice person and a very good sport.

But what really put an icing on the cake that earned Mayol a measure of respect particularly from the press was his reply to the question pertaining to the illegal blow that Nino threw at him that knocked him out cold.

When asked to comment about the incident and give his personal insight about it, Mayol calmly replied that ?accidents do happen in boxing" and that he holds no grudge against Nino Romero. "I will just be more careful next time,? he added.

Mayol?s reply visibly impressed many at the press conference. Some apparently expected Mayol to express disdain to what happened, but he did not. ?Now, many respect the man,? Jesse Arevalo informed us.

To add icing to the cake so to speak, Mayol gain additional fans, respect and a lot of cheers when he gladly donned a replica of the official shirt of the Mexican National Soccer Team currently competing at South Africa for the FIFA World Cup.
