MAYOL AT CUIDAD DE QUERETARO

PhilBoxing.com

Rodel Mayol, the WBC Junior Flyweight Champion of the World, broke camp at the Wildcard Gym at Hollywood last Sunday and headed east to the City of Queretaro, Mexico to defend his title against former champion Omar Nino Romero.

Mayol, upon advice of his trainers flew to Queretaro early to get acquainted with the place and acclimatize to the weather and get comfortable with the altitude. With him on the trip are his trainers Jesse Arevalo and Moray Quijano as well as his Dad, Rodrigo who will be seeing him defend his title for the first time.

Queretaro is 120 miles northwest of Mexico City and was once the capital of Mexico. It is well known for its Spanish colonial architecture and geometric grids. It is one of the most visited ?non-beach? cities in Mexico due to its unique architecture and historical significance.

Mayol has been jogging in and around the hotel where he is staying with his Team as well as in nearby parks. He also keeps sharp by doing the mitts with Arevalo and his usual exercises supervised by Quijano.

Latest reports from the team to this writer indicates that Mayol is past the ?jetlag? that usually occurs when boxers move from one time zone to another. ?He loves the place as it reminds him home back in the Philippines,? Quijano said. ?He is in perfect condition, mentally and physically. His weight is just about where we want it at this stage and I am sure making 108 on Friday will be a breeze,? he added.

Mayol?s title defense will be chronicled by Wildcard Gym lens man, Miguel Salazar. ?We are doing a documentary, 'Road to Romero' and hopefully we can put that up soon,? Salazar informed this writer.

On Thursday, this writer who will be Mayol?s cut-man and Lira Mayol will be flying to Queretaro via Houston, Texas to join the Team in time for the open media day where Mayol will be signing autographs and posing for pictures with his Mexican fans.

Official weigh-in will be on Friday at 1:00 at the Zocalo de San Juan del Rio and the fight will be on Saturday, June 19, 2010 at the Plaza de Toros del Centro Expositor. It will televised via Fox Sports in the USA and TV Azteca in Mexico.
