JORGE ARCE CUT DURING SPARRING, FIGHT WITH ERIC MOREL IS OFF; CAN BANAL BE A SUBSTITUTE?
By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Tue, 25 May 2010
 Jorge Arce.
Jorge ?El Travieso? Arce, the former three-time world champion will not be fighting on June 26th at the Alamo Dome at San Antonio, Texas. Arce was supposed to tangle with WBO Bantamweight title holder, Eric Morel.
Arce suffered a deep cut on the right eyelid just below the corner of the eyebrow during sparring with Luis Jorge Lugo at the Montiel Gym in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico. The cut needed stitches and will prevent Arce from sparring for at least three weeks.
With Arce gone, will AJ Banal make a good substitute to face Morel?
Can Banal who is in deep training at the ALA Gym in Cebu for a pending bout on June 26th at Norfolk, Virginia switch gear and re-trench to prepare for Morel at 118 lbs?
Banal is certainly qualified to fight for a title and the unfortunate accident that occurred to Arce could have a redeeming value for Banal and the promoters of the Arce-Morel tiff.
And he certainly deserves a shot at Morel who beat Gerry Penalosa in a close fight not too long ago at Las Vegas.
Leon Panoncillo, the WBO Asia Pacific rep has done wonders for the WBO and the Filipino fighters in the past and continues to do so on a regular basis and if there is anyone who can get Banal the fight, it is the dashing Pinoy who is now based in Thailand.
Will Leon?s magic and influence of the WBO play a factor in getting Banal as a substitute for Arce just so the fight card at the Alamo Dome will continue?
I should hope so.
Therefore, I implore Panoncillo to get on the phone and do his thing. I know he can get it done.
Panoncillo has good enough relationship with the ALA Gym where Banal trains and I know he has connections with Top Rank and other promotions company so getting on the phone to get a fight between Morel and Banal would not be too difficult.
So how about it, Leon, you think you can swing this one?
