DOMINGO?S WIN MERITS A MATCH WITH IBF CHAMP YONNHY PEREZ By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Mon, 24 May 2010 Michael Domingo?s smashing win over Columbian Luis Melendez at the very least made him earn a shot at a title. The best deal that is available will be a match with another Columbian, Yonnhy Perez. The IBF champion barely escaped with his crown last Saturday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles against a former Olympian who like Perez held a 20-0-0 record before their fight. Perez and Abner Mares fought to a majority draw on the undercard of the Marquez-Vasquez ?Once and Four All? classic fight series. A Perez-Domingo fight, just like the Domingo-Melendez, fight could have ?revenge? as its theme as well. Only now, it is the Columbians who need to extract the payback. A title fight in the Philippines, particularly in Cebu would be ideal. But I am sure Domingo will fight anywhere. Such is a trademark of ALA boxers. However, if such a fight could be arranged in Cebu, it is my hope that Perez would arrive in the Philippines at the very least a week before the fight. It would be ideal if he can be there 12 days before the fight. That should give him enough time to adjust to the environment and get rid of jet lag. Thus, the long travel and jet lag would not be an excuse in case he losses his crown to the hard hitting Pinoy. It was heart warming to learn that Domingo?s immediate reaction after his win was to turn around and gestured to Z Gorres who was at the ringside with his wife that the ?fight was for you.? That is so classy of him. A typical behavior that is so common amongst the respected fighters from the ALA Gym. For that, we can credit the famed boxing patron of Cebu, Tony Aldeguer.
