MAYOL UPS TRAINING TEMPO FOR ROMERO REMATCH By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Thu, 13 May 2010 LOS ANGELES -- Rodel Mayol, the WBC World Junior Flyweight champion, was hard at training today at the famed Wildcard Gym of Freddie Roach. Supervising him as he goes through the hard grind are his two loyal people, Jesse Arevalo and Moray Quijano. ?His training is just right on schedule,? Quijano told this writer. ?He is in a much better shape at this point of his training than when he trained for his first Nino Romero fight. And he was in good shape that time,? he added. Seeing Mayol go 8 rounds of hard sparring today against Takasi Okada of Japan and the wily veteran Angel Berranza of Mexico indeed supports the statements of Quijano. Mayol gave Okada everything he can take, chasing the young Japanese all over the ring and hitting him with his famed right cross almost at will for four long rounds. Then he took on Angel Berranza who as veteran was supposed to give Mayol the opposition he needed. But Mayol stood his ground and battered the bigger Berranza much like he did Okada. Arevalo was pleased with what he saw and he told this writer that beginning this Friday, they will bump up the sparring to 10 rounds for the next three weeks and then taper down again to 8 rounds leading the fight on June 19th. After the sparring Mayol did 3 rounds on the double bag, another three rounds on the speed bag and 10 continuous minutes jumping rope. After that he moved to another spot and did his stretching. Mayol goes through the same routine in addition to doing the mitts with Arevalo every other day for the last three weeks and as Quijano mentioned:- ?he is right on schedule!?
