Biggest Upset In China Open: World Champion Out In Round 2 By Zhenyu Li PhilBoxing.com Thu, 08 Apr 2010 World champion Italian Domenico Valentino, one of the biggest names who traveled across the vast ocean to compete in China, suffered a sensational defeat in the on-going AIBA China Open boxing tournament in Guiyang, Guizhou Province on Wednesday, going down by far as the biggest upset in the top-level international boxing tournament. The veteran lightweight who won the 2009 World Boxing Championships title on home turf was upset 8-1 by the little-known Kazakhstan Gani Zhailauov in the quarterfinals. The final score was 0-4, 1-1 and 0-3. The hard punching Valentino banged the ring post heavily when he walked off the boxing ring, letting go of his resentment, whilst his handler could not help but shook his head. The Italian also had a sluggish start. He squeaked by in his first outing with merely one-point edge over an unknown fighter. With the British star Frankie Gavin turning pro and Cuban technician Yordenis Ugas moving up in weight, the amateur lightweight is a division that falls short of a dominant player. However, this sorry state leaves competitors from around the globe more chances to contend for gold, especially for those Asian fighters who excel in the lower weight classes. * * * Zhenyu Li.
