PhilBoxing.com

Manila---Filipino FIDE Master (FM) Christian Gian Karlo Arca fortified his hold of the top spot with a draw over Singaporean International Master (IM) Liu Xiangyi in the sixth round of the Quang Ninh GM2 chess tournament in Ha Long Ward, Ha Long City, Vietnam.

Arca from Dasmariñas City, Cavite split the point with Liu in 34 moves of Queen's Indian Defense on Friday night to secure 4.5 points on account of 3 wins and 3 draws in the round robin event organized by Viet Nam Chess Federation.

The 15-year-old Arca is eyeing his second International Master (IM) norm.

"May konting advantage ako in Rd6 but I failed to convert it for a win," said Arca, a Grade 9 student of Dasmariñas Integrated High School, who hails from Panabo City.

"Praying that God will give me the favor in my remaining 3 games," added Arca, who got his first IM norm during the 18th IGB Dato' Arthur Tan Malaysian Open Chess Championships held on Aug. 28 to Sept. 3, 2023 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

To become an IM, a player must get the three norms over 27 or more games and a FIDE rating of 2400 or more.

According to FIDE Handbook rules, Arca needed to score 5.5 points to earn his second IM norm while 7.0 points to secure his first GM norm.

Candidate Master (CM) Dinh Nho Kiet of Vietnam drew with International Master Michael Concio Jr. of the Philippines to stay at solo second place with 4.0 points on account of 2 wins and 4 draws.

Concio, Grandmaster (GM) John Paul Gomez of the Philippines, top seed Grandmaster (GM) Tran Tuan Minh of Vietnam and Grandmaster (GM) Nguyen Anh Dung of Vietnam have similar 3.0 points.

Both Arca and Concio are playing under the guidance of Dasmariñas City mayor Jenny Barzaga and national coach FIDE Master Roel Abelgas.-Marlon Bernardino-
