JHONNY GONZALEZ COMES BACK WITH A VENGEANCE
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 24 Mar 2010

Former WBO bantamweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez who lost his title via a seventh round , one-punch knockout to veteran Filipino southpaw Gerry Penalosa on August 11, 2007 and then fought his way back to a WBC super bantamweight title shot and lost by a 3rd round TKO to Japan/s Toshiaki Nishioka on May 23, 2009 has moved up in weight and come back with a vengeance.
Gonzalez (43-7, 37 KO’s) won a WBC featherweight eliminator at the City Discotheque in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico, destroying Antonio Davis (26-6, 13 KO’s) with four knockdowns in the second round to win the crucial title eliminator.
After his stunning loss to the veteran southpaw Penalosa, Gonzalez came back to win six fights in a row, five by knockouts before he earned the title shot against Nishioka in which he decked the Japanese in the opening round but was himself dropped in round three after which the fight was stopped.
Just as he did before the tough Mexican battled back and won three fights in a tow all by knockout with the last being against Marlon Aguilar over whom Gonzalez scored a 4th round TKO to set up the title eliminator against Davis.
Mark Vester of the widely-read site boxingscene.con reported that Davis got off well landing a nice left hand but Gonzalez began to let his hands go in the final minute of the first round and had Davis in all sorts of trouble.
Vester reported that in the first minute of the second round, Gonzalez dropped Davis with a hard uppercut. Moments later Gonzalez dropped him again for the second knockdown. Davis tried to survive but was knocked down again for a third time. With time running out in the round, Gonzalez landed a wicked two punch combination to knock Davis out cold and the fight was stopped after the fourth knockdown.
