MAYOL-NINO REMATCH SHOULD BE ON PURSE BID By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Thu, 11 Mar 2010 Now that WBC’s President, Don Jose Sulaiman has confirmed the “technical draw” decision for the Mayol-Nino fight that happened in Mexico last February 27th as “final”, its time that both teams put the past in the back burner and go on with the rematch. However, since there is no longer a contract with the previous promoter that will force the rematch to be held in Mexico, it will only be fair if WBC orders a “purse bid” to determine who will promote the fight and where it should happen. Now, hopefully no one will misconstrue the above call for a purse bid as a lack of trust on my part regarding the ability of the Mexican promoters to put together a fair fight again with neutral officials (judges and referee). They have demonstrated that in the last fight, thus there is no doubt that they can perfectly do it again. All I am saying is that purse bid will do wonders to the fight and the fighters as well. First, it will create a purse that will be good for the boxers, particularly if it’s higher than the last purse awarded to both fighters. Secondly, it will give a different set of crowd a chance to see the fight “live”. The good people of Mexico have seen the two gladiators already, now its time that others are given that chance too. A rematch in greater Los Angeles area where a great numbers of Mexican and Filipino boxing fans are based will be a good place to hold the fight. There are many sites in and around LA such as the Staples Center and the LA Sports arena. They can even hold it in some of the Casinos that are not too far from LA such as the Morongo, San Manuel, Agua Caliente, and Chumash. Or why not have the fight in Las Vegas? It’s not too far out to think that many of the big guns there may be interested in doing the fight now that it has generated a lot of interest from boxing fans. So, let’s get on with the purse bid and get the fight contract signed and delivered. A Mayol-Nino re-match will surely be one hell of a fight!
