PI?OL POWER By Ken Smith, ABA PhilBoxing.com Mon, 15 Feb 2010 ![]() I am usually not one to give positive comments when it comes to my boxing competition. However my experience last night in Mlang, North Cotobato will give me the opportunity to try. Two of my young Filipino fighters were lucky enough to be included on North Cotobato Vice Governor [soon to be Governor] Manny Pi?ol's WBO Oriental double header in the peaceful and friendly town of Mlang, North Cotobato just last night. The fight card was absolutely one of the best I have been fortunate enough to attend in all the Philippines, including the 20 or so I have promoted or co-promoted myself. From the prelims, which my young upstarts were involved, to the double WBO Oriental main event, the fights were entertaining and competitive. All of the fights were evenly matched with permission from the Games and Amusement Board, and fairly officiated, and judged by GAB. I am never interested in seeing my boys in tough fights, but last night in Mlang they certainly were [both American Boxing Academy fighters won close decisions in competitive and evenly matched fights]. I will offer this comment to any boxing manager who is considering making the trip to Mlang with their fighters: "Be ready for war." Soon to be Governor Pi?ol, who is a political icon on Mindanao, along with his large family of brothers, have a taste for tough fights and are not afraid to test the metal of their talented stable of fighters against anyone willing to accept the challenge. The Pi?ols are extremely passionate and equally knowledgeable when it comes to the fight game. The fighters that I saw last night were all well trained, and very well conditioned, and seemed to fight with an intensity that explains the high expectations of these boxers by their countrymen. This was my first time meeting Mr. Manny Pi?ol and his brothers, and I was also fortunate enough to meet the matriarch of the family Mrs Pi?ol, who in here own right is an amazing and also a very pretty woman who has raised some 11 boys into being very successful men. It was a refreshing sight to see such a woman. My first impression of the Pi?ols was a good one. I was greeted warmly by Mr Manny Pi?ol, a man I had heard a lot about but who I had never met before last night. I was introduced by Mr Pi?ol to his family and friends, and made to feel very welcomed by them all [I was even invited to dinner with them]. Now all of this sounds nice and inviting, but again I will remind boxing managers if you come to Mlang to have dinner with the Pi?ols, your fighters better be ready to fight or they will become the main course.
