AUSTRALIA'S PROMOTER OF THE YEAR WATCHED VILORIA-TAMARA FIGHT CARD By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 25 Jan 2010 Among the foreign visitors at ringside for the "Collission Course" fight card at the Cuneta Astrodome last Saturday in which Colombia's Carlos Tamara stunned IBF light flyweight champion Brian Viloria to win the title via a 12th round TKO was three-time "Promoter of the Year" Peter Maniatis. Maniatis who hosts a popular weekly television show, "KO Boxing" in Australia flew in to watch the fights with Neil Ellis, the father of promising Fil-Australian Heath Ellis who is expected to fight for the WBO Asia Pacific interim title sometime soon. The 21 year old Ellis has a record of 12-1-1 with 6 knockouts and is the current IBF Pan Pacific welterweight champion. His father Neil told us he'd love to have his son fight in the Philippines to showcase his talent. Also watching the fights along with Maniatis was pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao's first trainer Rick Stehely who was in Pacquiao's corner when he won the WBC flyweight title with a sensational eighth round knockout of Thai hero Chatchai Sasakul. Both Maniatis and Stehely were impressed with the durability and conditioning of Tamara and his non-stop punching in the final rounds. They also praised both fighters for an exciting bout and said Viloria was a true champion who gave it his all. Maniatis who promotes quite a few Filipino fighters on his popular cards in Melbourne is looking at the possibility of bringing over some of Australia's promising fighters for some sort of dual meet with the Philippines. Both boxing men wished Viloria all the best and expressed the hope that he will quickly recover and be out of the Makati Medical Center where he underwent several tests which all showed he was fine and there was nothing to worry about although Viloria will need a few weeks rest.
