“THERE WILL BE FIREWORKS” – Brian Viloria

PhilBoxing.com

BOXING AT THE BAY: COLLISION COURSE is set to explode today as IBF junior flyweight champion Brian Viloria (26-2, 15 KOs) of Waipahu, Hawaii will be making his second title defense at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City against Carlos “El Olimpico” Tamara (20-4, 14 KOs) of Colombia.

This will be Viloria's second fight here in the Philippines. Last April The Hawaiian Punch fought the fight of his life and won the IBF title from Mexico's Ulises Solis with a dramatic 11th round knockout at the Araneta Coliseum. He defended his title last September in Hawaii against Mexico’s Jesus Iribe and won by unanimous decision.

Tamara lost in his first world title shot to WBO flyweight champ Omar Narvaez in 2008. A familiar name that appears on Tamara’s record is Alejandro Hernandez. This is the same Hernandez that gave Marvin Sonsona fits and a split draw in their bout in Canada last November. Tamara beat Hernandez by unanimous decision in 2007.

In the co-main event, WBO minimumweight champion Donnie "Ahas" Nietes (25-1-3, 14 KOs) of the ALA Gym of Cebu will fight against Jesus Silvestre (15W-1L, 12 KO’s) of Mexico in a non-title bout. Nietes has already scored three successful defense against Eddy Castro of Nicaragua and Mexicans Erik Ramirez and Manuel Vargas.

Silvestre won his last fight in Mexico by first round knockout over Felipe Lopez.

Another Cebu based boxer, Jimrex “The Executioner” Jaca (28 W (KO 13) - L 6 -D 3) will return to the ring after being absent for a year against Ramadhan “Ransom” Weriu of Indonesia. Jaca is a talented boxer and is best known for his gallant 9th round KO loss to Juan Manuel Marquez in 2006. The 30 year old Weriu (13 W (KO 12)-L 2 - D 1) won by KO or TKO in his last four fights.

Philippine lightweight champ Jason Pagara (20W (KO 10) - L 1) of the ALA Gym will face Eddy Comaro of Indonesia. The 23yo Comaro (22 W(KO 8) – L 6 – D 5) drew in his last fight against countryman Simson Butar-butar.

Dodie Boy Penalosa,Jr. will make his pro debut against Anthony Balubar in a six round bout. Undefeated Jay Solmiano will face Daryl Pucdol in an eight round contest.

Denver “The Excitement” Cuello will face Samuel Apuya while Dennis Laurente will face Thailand’s Laimungkorn Chuwatana in ten round bouts. Other supporting bouts include Joselito Campana vs Jose Ocampo, Bryan Diano vs John Mark Apolinario, Ivan soriano vs Jomar Tumbaga and Mike randyPetalcorin vs Marlon Tapales.

Preliminary bouts start at 9 A.M. Manila Time, TV bouts at 11 A.M. Coverage is courtesy of Solar Sports and Solar TV.
