GORRES COMING HOME IN MID FEBRUARY

PhilBoxing.com

Z “The Dream” G ores whose most memorable performance in a smashing ten round decision over hard-hitting Luis Melendez of Colombia turned into a nightmare that ended his quest for a richly-deserved world title when he collapsed after the fight and underwent brain surgery is hopefully coming home in mid-February.

In an overseas telephone conversation with www.insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports Dr. Ben Calderon who has been attending to Gorres and monitoring his post-operative condition on a daily basis said “he is doing much better and yesterday was his first day out of the house after being discharged last Friday from the hospital (The University Medical Center in Las Vegas.) after more than two months of hospitalization.”

Dr. Calderon revealed that Gorres and his wife Daches stay with a member if his staff and that “our target for him to go home is mid-February.” He said he had told Gorres to “go to my clinic every single day so he can rehab and I am happy that his wife is very supportive and our Filipino rehab doctors are providing free services.”

The doctor said he doesn’t “see any problem” for him to travel although his “only worry was infection but the risk of bleeding is no more.” Dr. Calderon said he visited Gorres last night and said “We even ate at a Filipino restaurant.”

Dr. Calderon said he was meeting with a planning committee to discuss how to proceed with Gorres’ rehab. He said his right side was okay but his left side was “very weak and would take another six months to recover”. Dr. Calderon explained that the circulation in that part of his brain was cut-off resulting in the weakness and indicated “that’s the one that we are trying to rehabilitate and once there is no inflammation around that area he will recover slowly.”

Dr. Calderon said Gorres was “in good spirits” and that “the thing that’s really pushing him to work harder is his determination which is there, being a fighter. Besides his wife is very supportive and the support of the Filipinos in Las Vegas has overwhelmed Gorres.”

He disclosed that about fifty percent of the nurses are Filipinas and “they bring him food , give them money and help in so many ways.”

Dr. Calderon said he was very happy that even the boxing coach of the University of Nevada Las Vegas, Frank Slaughter, “who is really instigating the local media to feature Gorres because our goal is to really help boxers in the future even though they may not be Filipinos.”

He indicated they were pushing for an increase in the insurance coverage for fighters who are injured in the ring. He said the insurance coverage for Gorres was erased in a few days and the cost of his hospitalization was over $540,000 or some P25 million.

When informed about the plan of pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao to host a dinner along with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum to raise funds for Gorres, Dr. Calderon “we need to show that the Filipinos are trying to pay for the cost even if its $50,000 to $100,000. It doesn’t matter.”
