The Ninja Returns: Bert Batawang Goes To China for WBO As-Pac Title

PhilBoxing.com

One of Cebu boxing’s old warriors Bert “The Ninja” Batawang will return to the ring in Guangdong, China this November 28 against Jack Amisa of Indonesia for the vacant WBO Asia-Pacific jr. flyweight title.

The 38 year old Batawang is a 61 fight ( 44 W -14 L- 3 D , 36 KO’s) veteran who turned pro in 1990. He has won the Philippine light flyweight, WBA Pan-African and WBO Oriental light flyweight titles. But the world title eluded him in 2007 when he lost to Ulises Solis of Mexico by 9th round TKO for the IBF lt.flyweight crown. In 2002, he also lost to a future world champ, Muhammad Rachman of Indonesia by 10 round decision. Rachman once described this as the hardest fight of his career.

Last April, Batawang lost his Oriental title to Edren Dapudong of the Braveheart Boxing Club by 7th round TKO in one of the best fights seen in Cebu this year. The Ninja is a grizzled road warrior who has fought in Japan, Indonesia, South Korea, South Africa and Mexico. He has always given boxing fans their money’s worth. Batawang has been going to the IPI Gym in Mandaue City to prepare for this fight.

His opponent, Jack Amisa is a seven year pro from Jakarta with a record of 19W -10 L -2 D with 14 KO’s. He lost to Dapudong two years ago by 3rd round TKO and also came up short in previous attempts to win various regional belts like the PABA and Asian Boxing Council titles.

Promoter Sammy Gello-ani informed about Batawang’s fight in China prior to his departure to Las Vegas. Gello-ani will be there for Federico Catubay’s IBF superflyweight eliminator bout against Mexican Juan Alberto Rosas one day before the Pacquiao-Cotto megabout. He will then go to Canada for Marvin Sonsona’s WBO superflyweight title defense against Alejandro Hernandez of Mexico on November 22 (Manila Time).
