Donnie Nietes' Continuing Fight For Recognition By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Thu, 17 Sep 2009 The multiple postponements which affected his preparation for his third title defense against Manuel Vargas of Mexico was a blessing in disguise for Donnie "Ahas" Nietes. Their title fight was included in the popular boxing series “Latin Fury” and subsequently aired live to the Philippines. Last February, Nietes’ second successful WBO title defense against Erik Ramirez in Oaxaca, Mexico was shown on Philippine television 21 days after the actual bout took place. Most Filipinos would not recognize Nietes if they see him walking inside a mall in street clothes. He does not have extraordinary pulling power when it comes to commercial sponsors and the mainstream media. Which poses an interesting question: Is talent enough if you're a mimimumweight? Nietes (25W-1L-3D with 14 KO’s) is a well rounded boxer. In his split decision win over Vargas, he showed the grit and determination that separates champions from mere mortals. He has defended his world title three times, twice in his challenger's home country. But crossover fame continues to elude Nietes. Filipinos have been spoiled by the Pacman's international success. We also have other world titlists – Brian Viloria, Nonito Donaire and Marvin Sonsona – which Nietes also has to compete with for press coverage and fan base. Nietes does not have his own TV commercial. To some, he is just “that boxer with the big snake.” But for us, who still remember how hard it was for Filipino boxers to be recognized abroad, how hard it was for a Filipino to win overseas, and the times when we had no world champion for months to years on a stretch, we recognize Nietes' accomplishments. When our high profile multi-millionaire basketball players fail, our unassuming and underrated boxers restore our pride. Nietes rose from being a janitor/utility boy to become champion of the world. The average Filipino who continues to struggle in life can surely identify with that. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Rene Bonsubre, Jr.. |
