ARCE BATTLES PINOY LUMACAD IN ATLANTIC CITY By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Tue, 16 Jun 2009 Arce. Mexican legend Jorge "Travieso" Arce is set to fight young Filipino boxing prospect Fernando Lumacad on June 27 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The card was originally scheduled for June 20 in Juarez, Mexico and then moved to Tijuana. Promoters, however, are bent on putting the show at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. The June 27 card already has a stellar lineup featuring WBO superbantam champ Juan Manuel Lopez defending his title against Olivier Lontchi as well as the Fernando Montiel vs Eric Morel WBO bantamweight showdown. Arce vs Lumacad will be for the WBA International superflyweight title. Lumacad, who fights out of Digos City and managed by American Boxing Academy (ABA) founder Ken Smith, is currently in Los Angeles with chief second Glenn Salazar to continue his training for the fight. "This one-week postponement is actually good for Lumacad. He can now adjust better to the time difference," said a source. Smith, in an interview, said that the fight with Arce is definitely going to be a very difficult one, but his boy has prepared for any eventualities. "The fight with Arce will be a hard fight... I expect 12 rounds...We are all doing our best to keep Fernando relaxed and focused, and we will keep our focus on him for the next several days until he enters the ring...He is as ready as he can be..We are all very confident in Fernando even if the boxing world isnt," Smith said in an interview from Los Angeles. "He is a huge underdog in this fight. But the truth is most any fighter in the world will be a huge underdog against "Arce the Great." This is a dream fight for Lumacad, should he upset Arce, he will be "the man". Either way his life will change dramaticaly.I am certain of one thing, and that is that Lumacad will enter the ring unafraid, and will engage the champion. We will see then what happens. I hope so much for this boy. He is as deserving as any i have met. Please wish him luck, and pray that he is safe. This is the biggest thing that has ever happened to this kid, and I just really hope and pray that it is his destiny to do this right. Team Lumacad will give our best efforts. I hope it is enough," added Smith. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Salven L. Lagumbay. |
