RICKY HATTON TRIVIA By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Sat, 28 Mar 2009 Ricky Hatton is currently ranked No. 8 by The Ring Magazine in the top ten pound-for-pound list and is also The Ring junior welterweight champion. Hatton?s nicknames are The Hitman, The Manchester Mexican, The Pride of Hyde and Ricky Fatton. In only his second fight, Hatton fought at the Madison Square Garden, New York, winning over American Robert Alvarez by unanimous decision in four rounds. Hatton was a heavy underdog when he beat Kostya Tszyu for the IBF light welterweight title and his win was considered as one of the best victories by an English boxer in the last 20 years. He was about a 2-1 betting underdog against Tszyu and will be about the same against Manny Pacquiao. Hatton joined the family carpet business when he quit school, but he cut four of his fingers with a Stanley knife, so his father made him a salesman to avoid further damage to his fingers. Hatton, 30-years-old like Pacquiao, has charted his career towards retirement. After facing Pacquiao, he hopes to face Juan Manuel Marquez, and aimed at a showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr., who handed him the only loss of his career. In the Mayweather fight, referee Joe Cortez deducted a point from Hatton in round six after he punched the back of Mayweathers' head when he was shoved under the top rope. He said that his anger on the deduction had caused him to lose his calm and that added to his collapse. Hatton?s alliance with Floyd Mayweather Sr. has revived his career. A brief but successful seven-week training before the Paulie Malignaggi fight made Hatton believe he made the right decision in getting Mayweather Sr. replacing his long-time trainer Billy Graham. Hatton is unbeaten at 140 pounds (light welterweight), his natural weight division. It was reported that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were among the stars to comfort Hatton after his dismal defeat by Mayweather in a match that was also witnessed by other stars like Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes, Kid Rock, Sylvester Stallone and Jude Law. Punchstats during the Hatton-Mayweather fight: Mayweather Punches Landed/Thrown - 129-329, 39.2%; Hatton Punches Landed/Thrown - 63 -372, 16.9%. Upon the retirement of Joe Calzaghe, the life of British boxing is solely heaved on Hatton in bringing world-class boxing to the United Kingdom. Hatton relinquished his IBF light welterweight belt after refusing to face a mandatory defense against number one contender Naoufel Ben Rabah, because he moved up to the welterweight division.
