GORRES STOPS LEYVA; MILENDO DECISIONS RACHMAN! PhilBoxing.com Sat, 14 Mar 2009 CEBU CITY--Z "The Dream" Gorres proved too skillful for ex-world champ Roberto "Mako" Leyva as he stopped the latter in the seventh round minutes ago at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel to claim the vacant WBO Oriental bantam title. Leyva's trainer Raul "Jibaro" Perez waved his arms to signal to referee Bruce McTavish that his ward has had enough, as Gorres rained blows on Leyva in the seventh round for a fine technical knockout victory for the ALA fighter. Leyva seemed willing to continue, as he was seen asking his trainer why he had to stop the fight, but the move was well-received by fans as the visiting fighter just had no answer to Gorres' combination. The win improved Gorres' record to 29 wins, 2 losses, 2 draws with 16 KO's, and assures him of barging into the top 15 of the WBO's bantam ranks, said WBO Asia Pacific chairman Leon Panoncillo, who was at ringside to award the belt. In the co-feature, ALA fighter Milendo Milendo was stretched to the limit, and had to dig deep into his final ounce of courage as he escaped with a hard-earned unanimous decision verdict over ex-IBF champ Muhammad Rachman. Milendo started fast at the get-go, but Rachman proved tough and came back in the later rounds to make the fight competitive. All three judges scored the bout for Milendo, 97-93, 98-92, 96-94, who improved his record to 18 wins, no loss with 5 KO's. Michael Domingo fashioned out a unanimous decision over veteran Monico Laurente for his first win after being cleared of the hepatitis virus which infected him several months back. James Bacon knocked down William George badly in the first round, but was also stretched to the limit to settle for a unanimous decision win over the visiting fighter. Jomar Cordinillo took a majority decision win over Ricky Nunez, while Marjohn Macahilig stopped Marlon Ariesga in the opening round. |
