ELORDE SAYS RUBILLAR WILL GO FOR BROKE

PhilBoxing.com

Gabriel “Bebot” Elorde Jr says WBC light flyweight title contender Juianito Rubillar will go for broke in his fith attempt to win the world title, this time against reigning champion Edgar Sosa in Sosa’s hometown of Mexico City.

In a conversation with respected boxing writer and television correspondent James Blears in Mexico, Elorde said Rubillar knows very well that “this is his last card and he must go for it.”

Blears told Standard Today and Viva Sports that according to Elorde they are "looking for the fight to go the distance “but if he catches Edgar (Sosa) early, he’ll definitely take the opportunity. We have really prepared for this one and we’re ready.”

Elorde predicted “a helluva fight because Edgar Sosa is a great and scientific fighter but I think it will depend which boxer has the best condition on the night of the fight and the will to win.”

WBC president Don Jose Sulaiman in an overseas telephone conversation with www.insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports said there is a lot of excitement about the fight and Rubillar has been “very popular.” He said pictures of Rubillar kneeling at the sacred Juana Lopez shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe was splashed all over the Mexican newspapers and seen om television.

Sulaiman said Rubillar “looks very confident, very strong but Sosa is the champion and its going to be a very competitive fight.”

Rubillar earned the title shot after scoring a well-deserved split decision win over former world champion Omar Nino Romero and Sosa who was the main event on the same card in which he beat Filipino challenger Sonny Boy Jaro on points. Sosa noted the rugged determination of Rubillar in the clash with Omar Nino Romero in the title eliminator.

Sosa was quoted as saying that Rubillar was “tough, determined and very experienced” which meant that he would have to be “very intelligent in the first few rounds.”

The champion said he is at his best right now and would fight “ cleverly and aggressively.”

Sosa won the vacant title with a majority decision over Hawaii-based Filipino Bnrian Viloria on April 14, 2007 and after beating back the challenge of Sonny Boy Jaro in a fight where Sosa was dropped in the 9th round, the Mexican aims to beat Sosa and avenge to some extent what Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao has done to all the Mexicans he has faced.
